MARRIAGE DATE-PLACE: York County, Pennsylvania; St. Matthews Luthern Church; FHL film #020499--Matthias' marriage to Anna Maria Ritter. Marriage performed by Rev. C. F. Wildbahne. CHILDREN: Emmanual Reformed Church, Hanover, Pennsylvania. FHL film #20,499. Matthias Eble and Christiana are listed as the parents of Maria Elizabeth Eble, born 19 Feb. 1771, baptized 21 April 1771. The witnesses are John Peter Ebele and Maria Elizabeth Kuntz. In John Epley's (b. 1765) Revolutionary War Pension Record, FHL Film #970931 (Application date 9 July 1834) he states that his father is Matthias Epley. The other children I have listed for Matthias: Anna Margaretha, Jacob, Daniel, and Peter are NOT PROVEN. Much circumstantial evidence points towards them being siblings of John, because they all migrate to N. Carolina together as close neighbors and do several leagal transactions with each other. PARENTS: The will of John Epley, York County, Pennsylvania Wills, FHL #22133. States that his wife is Rosina and their eldest son if Matthias and their youngest son is Hans Peter. MILITARY SERVICE: During the Revolutionary War private Matthias Epley (Epli) served several militia tours: Oct. 10, 1781-Dec. 10, 1781 in Captain Andrew Foreman's Co., guarding Convention prisoners at Camp Security near Yor, and again Dec. 7, 1781-Feb. 7, 1782 in Captain John Wampler's Co. These are probably the dates for John Epley's service as a substitute for his father Matthias. Matthias Epley was drafted for the Revolutionary War but had his oldest son, John Epley serve in his place. John was stationed three miles East of the town of York, PA. where he served his fathers six month assignment, this was in the spring of 1782. At the end of this six month period, Matthias Epley brought to the camp a George Leonard and persuaded his son, John to serve three months in hi stead (I believe this George Leonard name is actually George Leonard Epley, who appears to be related). John served a total of nine months of service as a guard during the Revolutionary War. Archives, Service 6, Vol. 2, pg. 643, 649, 746, 815. TAX LISTS: Matthias is listed on the Tax Lists of Manheim Township, York County, PA. in 1771, 1779, 1780, and 1790. In the 1779 Tax List it shows Matthias as owning no land, negros, or horses, but he did own two cattle and was taxed $10. He is living next to his father John who owned 100 acres and 7 cattle. In 1780 Matthias is listed with two cattle. The 1788 Tax List of Manheim Twp. shows Matthias as owning 112 acres of land, no horses, two cows, no negros or grist mills. CENSUS: 1790 Census of York County, Pennsylvania, Matthias Apley was listed as a resident of Manheim Township. His house hold had two males over the age of 16 which included the head of the family, two younger males under the age of 16, and two females including the head of the family. In 1795 Matthias is listed as a resident in Paradise Township, York County, PA. but he does not appear in the county in later census records. LAND: On feb. 2, 1788 there was a Sheriff's Sale of Matthias Apple's estate. Matthias apparently owed Michael Zimmer a debt of 186 pounds and 19 shillings. In the document it states that sheriff John Edie did "seize the estate of Matthias Apple and improvement and Tract of Land situated in Manheim Township (York Co., PA) containing one hundred and thirty acres more or less adjoining lands of George Apple, Samuel Wiltison and others." Source: FHL film 022106 book 2E, pg. 423. OCCUPATION: Matthias was a Yeoman as stated in the document of the Sheriff's Sale of estate for Matthias Apple.
