"11 November 1782, Robert Roberts of Hope, bachelor, son of Hugh Roberts and Mary, his wife of Caerwys and Elizabeth Jones of Hope, spinster, daughter of Richard Jones by Mary, his wife, were married."
DEATH: From County Records Archivist.
	 "31 August 1839 Robert Roberts of Hope Owen, aged 80, buried."
Taken from the headstone located in the Church yard at Hope Parish Church.  Sacred to the memory of Robert Roberts of Hopeowen who died Aug 28 1839 Aged 81. Also Ann, Daughter of the above, died December 25, 1882, aged 86 years.  Grave is located on the South side of Hope Parish Church, 18 paces. Opposite semi-circle stone set at the base of the church wall.

    GRANDFATHER'S [JOHN BENNION JR.] NOTES ON ROBERTS & JONES FAMILIES.

       The following notes are copied from Grandfather's notes sent to me by Mary D. Brown before I went to Wales for research in 1937.  Every time a copy is made there is a chance for error.  Grandfather searched carefully the Hawarden register with the aid of the vicar.  The notes indicate he did not go to the registers of Flint, Mold, Cilcain and Hope, but interviewed many cousins, copied records they might have and noted down verbal information.  It is excellent and authoritatiave data, except as to exact dates.  There the parish records should govern.

       Great Grandfather was named Hugh Roberts, a native of Cilcern, Mold Parish, Flintshire. Great Grandmother was named Mary Roberts, was of the same place (H.S.B. note: Cilcern is Cilcain, pronounced Kilken, and spelled in past Kilken, Cilcen, or Cilcain.  Near Mold but an independent parish as far back as the register goes - 1577 A.D.)

       Great Grandfather on the other side, Richard Jones and his wife, Mary, were both of Hope Bowen Township, Hope Parish, Flintshire.  (H.S.B. note: should be Hope Owen township - immediately north and east of the village.)

       Grandfather Robert Roberts was from Cilcern, Mold Parish, Flintshire. He died August 28, 1839 age 81. [The County Archivist's record states he was buried the 31 August.]

       Grandmother Elizabeth Roberts of Hope Parish died 1 May 1839, aged 78. [The County Archivist's Record states she was buried the 16th of May.]

            Ann born July 3, 1797, died 14 April, 1815 [Robert Robert's grave stone states:  Also Ann,               Daughter of the above, died December 25, 1882, aged 86 years.]
            Maria born Feb 8, 1800, died 10 Sept 1831.
            Rebecca born Apr 10 1803, died 14 Dec 1835.

     Grandfather Roberts had an elder brother John and an younger brother Richard.  [H.S.B. notes: Observe that this fits exactly the family I found of Hugh Roberts and Mary Roberts in Cilcain.  John was christened 6 Apr 1757, Robert was christened 14 Dec 1758 and Richard was Christened 10 May 1761.]

     Grandfather Jones Roberts and a sister Mary and a sister Margaret.  Also a brother Robert Jones, his son Richard Jones I saw in Chester.  He is a chandler on Bridge Street.  [H.S.B. Notes: I found a record of the christening of Mary, daughter of Richard and Mary Jones of Hope Owen Township in the Hope Parish register, dated 18 Jan 1761.  The register needs searching for records of the other children. Observe that the previous note says Elizabeth Jones Roberts died May 16 1839 aged 78 years. This would have her born in 1761. Stated ages at death are not as dependable as recorded christening dates, but a question is raised that needs to be cleared up.

     From Grandfather's notes we know that she was the daughter of Richard and Mary Jones and her three brothers and sisters are named.  I found no marriage record of Richard and Mary but Grandfather John Bennion said they were both of Hope Bowen (Owen) Township.  I found a Mary Jones born in Hope Owen Township  18 Jan 1741.  I found a Mary Jones born in Hope Owen Township, but two were born in Hope village (1734 and 1735) and one was born in 1735 in Ewchymynydda-Issa Township just across the road from Hope Owen township.  Their families could later have moved into Hope Owen, though there was not much moving about in those days. The matter calls for more study.  I assumed that full records on the Jones family were had in Salt Lake and concentrated much of my time on pushing the connections farther back in the records.]

      Family of Uncle Richard Roberts.  He died Feb 18 1850.  Sarah Griffiths Roberts, his wife, died July 17 1852.

      Aunt Ann Roberts Edwards had one daughter born on or about the year 1830 or was 6 months old when Aunt Maria died.  [This would make her birthdate in March 1831. [H.S.B. note: evidently this was Elizabeth.]

      Maria Roberts Taylor died in Mold Parish. Her daughter, Mary Taylor, lives in Hawarden, is 29 years of age [means she was born in 1844 - H.S.B.] Thomas Taylor is a butcher in Chester.  John Taylor is a laborer in Shotten.

      Rebecca Roberts Purcell died in Birkenhead.

      Edward Edwards and family was born at Gresford in the year 1796. (Note: Gresford in Denbighshire, 3 1/2 miles southeast of Hope.)

      Ann Roberts Edwards born July 3, 1797.
       His first wife (Edward Edwards?) was Elizabeth Griffith.
       Thomas Grifith Edward died Oct 1844 age 50 (Note: date or age must be wrong. H.S.B.)

       (H.S.B. deduction:  Edward Edwards married Elizabeth Griffith about 1821 or 1823.  Elizabeth died about 1824.  Thomas G. Edwards born about 1822 or 1824.  Edward Edwards married Ann Roberts about 1825.  Edward born 1826, William born 1828, Elizabeth borh 1831, Peter born 1833 and Samuel born 1835.

My grandmother's sister, Margaret Jones Griffiths, born at Rhosay Brunah, Hope in 1760, d. in 1847.
