Richard Jones has been listed on early family group sheets as having been married to Mary Roberts, Mary Jones and later Mary Prichard. Work has been done for all three Marys. Mary Pritchard is used as the spouse because the only marriage for Richard Jones listed in the marriages for the time frame needed was Mary Pritchard. FROM HOWARD SHARP BENNION'S JOURNAL "June 20, 1937 In the late afternoon I went to Hope Village to survey the situation and make arrangements to see the records on Monday the 21st. The rector, Mr. Theophilus Jones, received me very kindly but he is an easy going type. Not one to put himself out for someone else. He said the old records had been burned. Didn't know how far the records went. I suggested twice that we go over to the church and have a look at them. I said my interest was in records prior to 1765. He thought all those were burned. Said he would be very busy Monday & Tuesday with a fete. Wanted me to put off my visit until then. Agreed to look at the books when he went in the church, 30 steps away, that evening and if I telephoned from Chester at 9:30 he would let me know how far back they went. I did so and he said they go back to 1668 but there were gaps in the next 100 years' record. He did not know how big the gaps. We agreed I would show up Monday morning at 9:30 (9:00 was too early for him) and could work in his study on the books until 1:00 p.m. when his day was so taken up I would have to get out. Earlier he told me that for some reason he got lots of requests for information from Utah. That one request asked for all the Jones & Roberts names between certain dates. (I could guess where that request came from), that it would have taken a solid month or two to copy them out and they just sent a few dollars, that he simply could not do anything about such requests. "June 20, 1937 Notes on Saturday. I arrived at Mold church 9:30 a.m. The Rector was working on his sermon. He got out the records and let me sit in his study with him and hunt through them. He is the Reverend McKenzie Williams and is a most obliging man. I worked from 10:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 3 when he had to go. "Mold Parish was large and there are a great volume of entries compared to those of Hawarden. The volumes are bound and the leaves are strong heavy vellum. The records begin with 1611. They are a mixture of Welsh and Latin up to the latter part of that century and many pages are very hard to make out. Not many more years of thumbing through and the ink will be gone. Only an experienced hand with the names of the region and times could safely make out many of them now. A newcomer, not knowing every family that ever lived there could guess. Even so some names at the bottom of pages are already wiped out completely. "One more point. The Welsh surnames and given names of this place were so few that there are hopeless repetitions in names. There were Edward Joneses born about every other day and Roberts and Williams galore. If you write to the rector to find you the birthdate of Richard Jones born between 1730 and 1735 he can open the book on any page and pick out one to five Richard Joneses. He has in a 5 year span perhaps 25-50 to pick from. If he only sends you one name, you accept it as final but if he gave the true record in full for the period you named, you would be utterly bewildered. If you asked for all the Jones names for the period he would about have to copy the book verbatim and he throws up his hands and balks. p.27-28. Searching the parish records there has only been one marriage of a Richard Jones located. That was to a Mary Prichard. Early temple work was done for Mary Roberts as the spouse of Richard Jones. Temple work has been done for both of these women, and they have been sealed to Richard.
