"The will of John Ap Howell ap Rees of Kilcaine, drawn 2 Apr and probated 12 Dec 1578, named his wife Elin Hanmer and his three daughters, Katherine, Anne and Jane the youngest daughter as executrices.
He made a provision in case his wife was then pregnant and had a son or another daughter.  He named as overseer of his will William Hanmer Esq.
of (illegible), Rees ap Howell ap Rees, my brother' and `Griffith ap Harry ap John, my brother-in-law.'  These provisions indicate a very young family.

"The testator made bequests to `my brother-in-law John ap John Thomas,' to his brother `Rees ap Howell and his brother Robert ap Howell' and to five others whose relationship to him is not stated.  Witnesses to the will were Rees ap James ap Rees, Kathryn Mostyn, John ap John Thomas, Ellis ap John Thomas, Wm. Howell, John ap Wm. and Rees ap Howell ap Rees.

"From the foregoing data I have assumed that youngest daughter Jane was two years old when her father died, that Katherine the oldest was six or born in 1572, that the testator was married in 1571 and born about 1546.

"Since brother Rees ap Howell ap Rees was named an overseer he had to be over 21 years of age in 1578. I have assumed him to be two years younger than his brother John.

"I estimated the birth year of brother Robert by subtracting 32 years from the estimated birth year of his son William.  The parish register records the christening date of William's oldest child as 21 Dec 1622, which date the estimated birth year of William is 1596.

"The Hanmers were gentry in Northop Parish adjoining Cilcain Parish  and there were Howells in the Mold Parish also adjoining Cilcain, but the records of these parishes do not go back far enough to find these two families."
