The last two named were probably also born in Crawford Co, Ind. They are named in the application for a pension, dated 16 Aug 1872, filed by Jacob's widow, as the dependent mother of James H. Sarah was 55 years old; Jacob, who died 31 Jan 1870, at age 57, had been an invalid from the year 1855, and not able to support his family because of diabetes, and disease of the spine and kidneys. Both William and James entered the service Oct 20, 1861, at Stephensport, Ky, in Co D, 27th Reg't Kentucky Infantry. The following letters show the concern both felt for their family, and their worry that the money they were sending home, might not be received. William died a few days after the first, of the following two letters, was written: "June 2, 1862, General Hospital No 2, Louisville, Kentucky, "Dear Father: "I write to you today to let you know that I am reasonably well, yesterday there was a boy from one of the hospitals came here and told me that my brother was dead which was very sad news to me, but today I was agreeably surprised by my brother coming to this hospital. I was glad to see him, for I did not ever expect to see him in this world, he is here and is getting quite smart, so that he can get about some, he came here on the boat last night. I don't know exactly where he came from, but we are here both in the same hospital, where we can see each other every day. The weather here is mild. William says he sent forty dollars to you, and he has not heard from you since he sent it. He wants you to write to us and let him know whether you got the money or not, there is not much news, so I will close, Your Loving son, James H. Peckingpaugh" The second letter was sent from Woodsonville, Hart Co, Ky, and was dated March the 19th 1863. "I received your kind letter of the 14th, and was glad to hear you were all well. Your letter found me well, I wish that I could see you all, but if I never get to come home again, I never will Desert. You need not think it of me, for before I do it I will have my head shot off, for I never want the name. We have drawed our pay and I sent you $8 dollars to you in a letter and as quick as you get it write and let me know; that neckless that I sent to Sis, Mahala wanted to know how I got it, tell her that we have a lottery here that we draw fro 20 cents we can draw a gold watch or anything else that we want. I have got a Company Record to send to you. It will show every place the Company has been in, you can see where the Company was in the Perryville fight so no more of that so I will proceed as follows. Otto and John Klipert are both well. I think we will stay here till our time is out. I am very well satisfied I am going to draw a locket and I will send to to you. No more at present but I remain your affectionate son. James H. Peckenpaugh to Sarah Peckenp
