Hist of Chazy, Clinton, extract: p. 56-57: Benjamin Graves was born in Connecticut on November 22nd 1760. He first enlisted as a private in the Continental Army in January 1776 and served for two enlistments. He was engaged at the siege of Boston and the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Elizabethtown, Connecticut Farms, and Yorktown. While at Valley Forge he contracted rheumatism. For three years during the Revolution he was a servant to George Washington and at its close received a fowling piece from the General in recognition of his fidelity. He was later granted a pension of $96 a year. About 1795 he settled in Clinton Co and lived in various locations until his death on March 22nd 1843. He is buried in the Chazy Landing Cemetery. He was county sheriff in 1801, 1804, 1810-11, and 1812-15; he was one of the origianal trustees of the Chazy Presbyterian Church; and he was supervisor of Chazy from 1806 until 1809. He married five times and was the father of 12 children by the time he married his fifth wife, Sally Burroughs, who was herself at that time the mother of 12 children of her own. His children were, by his first wife: Samuel who was killed in the Battle of Plattsburgh, George born 1785, Henry and Harmon-twins born 1790; by his second wife: Jeremiah born 1792 who became a court crier in Plattsburgh, Elizabeth born 1794, and Benjamin; by his third wife: Myron born 1805, Thompson born 1807, Mary born 1809, and Phoebe born 1813; by his fourth: Anthony. Gen of Graves Fam in Amer: Benjamin Graves, son of Benjamin, Joseph, Benjamin, John, was born Nov 22, 1760. Married 1) Lucretia Marsh, probably of Salisbury, Conn and a relative of George Marsh, whose child was buried in the same lot with Benjamin's sister Rebecca. He served in the Revolutionary War as private for 13 1/2 mo in Capt. McKinster's Co. Col. John Patterson's Mass. Regt. and from May, 1777 to June 1783 as private in Capt. Martin Kirtland's Co. of Col. R.J. Meigs' Conn. Regt. War Dep't at Washington says, "Claimed to be a body servant of General Washington for three years or more." He enlisted from Salisbury, Conn. Was in the following battles: "Siege of Boston"; Trenton; Princeton; Elizabethtown; Connecticut Farms; and Yorktown. He was on U.S. pension rolls and was a resident of Champlain, Clinton Co. N.Y. when he made the application. Was Sheriff of Clinton Co in 1801, 1810, and 1815. His wife Lucretia died and he married 2) Sept 27, 1835 Mrs. Sally (Marshall) Borroughs, widow of John Burrowghs, who died July 22, 1832. Benjamin Graves was a very prominent and influential man in Clinton Co, and was very much respected. His wife applied for transfer of pension to her, January 12, 1854, and obtained it. In 1798 the village contained about 250 inhabitants; a dwelling occupied by Benjamin Graves. p 155: Among the pioneers mentioned: Benjamin Graves. p 198: Altona City: This town lies north of the geographical centre of the county, and is bounded on the north by the town of Mooers, in the same county; on the south by the towns of Dannemora and Beekmantown, also in Clinton County; on the east by the town of Chazy; and on the west by the town of Ellenburgh, both in the same county. A rough road was cut through a portion of the town leading from Plattsburgh to the St. Lawrence road; 1796; over this simple pathway Benjamin Graves, the first settler in the town of Chateaugay, transported his entire household effects, suspended to the yoke of a pair of steers and on the back of a single ox. p 280: Benjamin Graves was an early sheriff of the county for three terms, and lived at Chazy village and at the lake, and later at Plattsburgh. A daughter married Daniel Douglass, and resides near the lake. p 286: Benjamin Graves was sheriff in 1801-3, 1810, 1812-14 inclusive.
