Descendants of Johann Adam & Anna Maria extract: John, born 13 Oct 1791, Breckinridge Co., Ky, died Sept 1868, Perry Co., Ind., Married 2 Oct 1811 in Breckinridge Co., Ky, Sally McDaniel/McDonald who was born 10 July 1793, near Hardinsburg, Ky; died April 1862, in Crawford Co., Ind, the daughter of James and Sarah (Rice) McDaniel and the stepdaughter of Henry Dean. Sarah (Sally) McDaniel was sometimes called Sally Dean. It is thought that her father was killed by Indians when she was a baby, and her mother remarried Henry Dean, a widower. Sally's mother, Sarah Rice, was the daughter of Nicholas Rice (Rev War Vet) and Mary Ann Marilda Elizabeth (Hickman) Rice, who had moved to Kentucky shortly after the Rev. War. On file in Hardinsburg, Ky, is proof that John was Peter's son. "The clerk of Breckinridge County Court will please let my son John Pekcenpaugh have license to marry Miss Sally McDaniel and oblige me, 1 Oct 1811 Yours, Peter Peckenpaugh" The census records show that John and Sally were in Perry Co., Ind., in 1820, and in 1840; and in Crawford Co., Ind., in 1850. They have not been found in 1830, but it is probable that they were in Illinois, or enroute to Illinois at that time. Perry County, Indiana, 1820: John Peckingpaw 1 male 26-45 2 males under 10 (1810-1820) 1 female 26-45 1 female under 10 (1810-1820) Pery County, Indiana, 1840: John Peckinpaugh 1 male 40-50 1 male under 5 (1835-40) 1 male 5-10 (1830-35) 3 males 10-15 (1825-30) 1 male 15-20 (1820-25) 1 female 40-50 1 female under 5 (1835-40) 1 female 5-10 (1830-35) Crawford County, Indiana, 1850: John Peckinpaugh age 59 born Kentucky Sarah 58 " Sarah 18 Illinois Henry 15 " Eliza 13 " The 1903 Warren County, Illinois, History, p 923, lists as pioneers of Kelly twp, Warren Co, Henry and John Peckenpaugh; and tells that the first marriage took place in Colbrook twp, Christmas Day 1831, between Elizabeth Peckenpaugh and Abner Arrasmith. Elizabeth's birth date, 9 Mar 1814 (family group sheet, Salt Lake City), makes it seem likely that she was the female under 10, listed in the 1820 Census. She is not remembered by descendants of John. Her family went farther west, her first child was born in Linn County, Iowa, 2 Dec 1832. The rest of John's family returned to Indiana where they married and raised their families. A Bible record has not been found. Descendants agree on 8, but do not name Elizabeth, who left the family circle early, Henry, who died young, and a couple of others who were probably children of John and Sally. Thirteen can be named. _______________________________________________________________________________ 8. The last two named were probably also born in Crawford Co, Ind. They are named in the application for a pension, dated 16 Aug 1872, filed by Jacob's widow, as the dependent mother of James H. Sarah was 55 years old; Jacob, who died 31 Jan 1870, at age 57, had been an invalid from the year 1855, and not able to support his family because of diabetes, and disease of the spine and kidneys. Both William and James entered the service Oct 20, 1861, at Stephensport, Ky, in Co D, 27th Reg't Kentucky Infantry. The following letters show the concern both felt for their family, and their worry that the money they were sending home, might not be received. William died a few days after the first, of the following two letters, was written: "June 2, 1862, General Hospital No 2, Louisville, Kentucky, "Dear Father: "I write to you today to let you know that I am reasonably well, yesterday there was a boy from one of the hospitals came here and told me that my brother was dead which was very sad news to me, but today I was agreeably surprised by my brother coming to this hospital. I was glad to see him, for I did not ever expect to see him in this world, he is here and is getting quite smart, so that he can get about some, he came here on the boat last night. I don't know exactly where he came from, but we are here both in the same hospital, where we can see each other every day. The weather here is mild. William says he sent forty dollars to you, and he has not heard from you since he sent it. He wants you to write to us and let him know whether you got the money or not, there is not much news, so I will close, Your Loving son, James H. Peckingpaugh" The second letter was sent from Woodsonville, Hart Co, Ky, and was dated March the 19th 1863. "I received your kind letter of the 14th, and was glad to hear you were all well. Your letter found me well, I wish that I could see you all, but if I never get to come home again, I never will Desert. You need not think it of me, for before I do it I will have my head shot off, for I never want the name. We have drawed our pay and I sent you $8 dollars to you in a letter and as quick as you get it write and let me know; that neckless that I sent to Sis, Mahala wanted to know how I got it, tell her that we have a lottery here that we draw fro 20 cents we can draw a gold watch or anything else that we want. Remarks: After the death of both parents, the children went to live with various relatives. As a result, not very much is known about some of the children. The surname was originally Beckenbach; emigrant ancestors were from Germany and emigrated to the US in 1751. Over a period of time the name became Peckinpaugh, with many various spellings, including Peckinpaugh, Peckenpaugh, Packinpaugh, Peckenpaw, Peckenpah, Peckingpaugh, etc. There is some confusion as to whether children #5 and #6 may be the same individual. The pension rec lists Eliza E, born 6 Jan 1859, but does not list Clara. The 1860 census shows Clara, born about Nov 1859, but does not show Eliza E. They may be one and the same person, or they may be two separate individuals. Temple ordinances have been done for two individuals. _______________________________________________________________________________ 2. Marr Rec extract: Married 12 Feb 1852 Aden H. Descendants of Johann Adam & Anna Maria Beckenbach extract: John M, born about 1839 is thought to be a son of John and Sallie (McDaniel) Peckinpaugh although he is not named by other family members. There is a John in the household of Peter, the oldest son of 1783 John, whose family had, for the most part, remained in Crawford Co, Ind, and not joined in the large migration to Illinois and points west. After the return of this family from Illinois, in the late 1830's, 1783 John was supposed to have seen Jacob at an election in Fredonia, and said that he was a first cousin. The two families were double related since Sallie's mother was a sister to Christene and Rachel Rice, 1783 John's first and second wives; and Sallie's husband, 1791 John, was the son of 1783 John's older brother, 1766 Peter. Thus both 1791 John and his wife Sallie, would have been first cousins to 1783 John's children. The 1850 Census of Crawford Co, Ind, shows a John M. Peckinpaugh, age 21, bornabout 1829 in Indiana, in the household of Peter and Susannah (Goldman) Peckinpaugh, and also a John N. Golman, age 28, born in Kentucky. Peter, 1783 John's oldest son, farmed a large acreage, and was a prosperous business man. John M's age puts him between Aden and Sallie in the list of children belonging to 1791 John and Sallie. No proff has been found, however, that he was their child, and no more is known about him.
