Aged Kings Valley Resident and Farmer Dies at his Daughter's Home
Hiram Tipton Maxfield, who had spent 73 years of his life in Benton county, and was widely known throughout western Oregon, passed away last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Addie Taylor, in this city. He had been ill but three days, his death resulting from pneumonia which developed from influenza.
Mr. Maxfield was born February 4, 1851, in Bellfield, Illinois, but crossed the plains at the age of 13 years in one of the early wagon trains and settled with his parents, Ephraim and Jane Maxfield, in Salem. The family remained there but a few years and then purchased a farm at Kings Valley, in Benton county where Mr. Maxfield, a pioneer farmer, passed the remainder of his life.
In 1873, Mr. Maxfield married Lydia Chambers, member of another pioneer Benton county family, who passed away 17 years ago. Eleven children were born to the couple and nine of these survive Mr. Maxfield. They include five daughters, Mrs. Nellie Smith, Dallas; Mrs. Tom J. Allan and Mrs. Addie Tayor, Corvallis; Mrs. Nettie Price, Kings Valley, and Mrs. Gladys Christenson, Monroe; four sons, F. E., of Kings Valley; R.H.,of Corvallis; C.E., of Alturas, California, and R.M. Maxfield, Hamilton, California. One brother, Walter Maxfield, resides at Kings Valley.
Mr. Maxfield was a member of the Evangelical church at Kings Valley. The funeral service will be held at one o'clock Monday afternoon in Mayflower chapel of the Hollingsworth funeral home. Rev. E.A. fogg of the Kings Valley church is to officiate and grandsons will act as pall beareres. Interment will be in the family plot at Kings Valley beside the grave of his wife.
The center of several family reunions held in Corvallis in recent years at which descendants gathered, Mr. Maxfield frequently came to this city. In late years, he had spent considerable time here at the home of his children.
