James Henry HARKLEROAD
BURIAL FROM RICHARD HARKLEROAD
POB.POD.CEM FROM GEORGE E. GEISLER FROM GEORGE E. GEISLER "HICKS WAS IN A LARGE GROUP OF FAMILIES WHO MIGRATED TO SULLIVAN COUNTY ABOUT 1780-1800. THEY WERE ALL MEMBERS OF A CHURCH IN MARYLAND. THEY SETTLED IN OR NEAR A FORT IN WHAT IS NOW BLUFF CITY, CALLED WOMANK'S FORT. ...THOSE DAYS FAMILIES SELDOM TRAVELED ALONE DUE TO THE DANGERS AND THE HARDSHIPS OF TRAVEL. ALSO, THE AREA OF THE CAROLINAS, TENNESSEE AND KENTUCKY WAS THE AREA TARGETED BY JOHN WESLEY AND HIS BROTHERS AS THEY WERE FOUNDING THE METHODIST CHURCH IN THE 1700S. THEY CAME OVER HERE TO CONVERT THE INDIANS, WITHOUT MUCH SUCCESS. LATER BISHOP FRANCIS ASBURY RODE THOUSANDS OF MILES BACK AND FORTH THROUGH THE APPALACHIANS PREACHING. SO IT MAKES SENSE TO ME THAT THE HICKSES WERE THERE IN A BUNCH. OTHER NAMES SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE GROUP WERE ROCKHOLDS, COX, SAMPSON, ROYSTON, CROSS. REV. HICKS' TOMBSTONE READS 'A CIRCUIT RIDER FOR FORTY YEARS'" FROM THE FILES OF RICHARD HARKLEROAD - MEMOIRS - THE HOLSTON METHODIST (SAT., JAN 19, 1884) EMALINE HICKS, DAUGHTER OF GEORGE HICKS, DEC'D, BROTHER OF REV. WILLIAM HICKS, DEC'D WAS BORN DECEMBER 9, 1826, WAS MARRIED TO HENRY HARKLEROAD, ESQ., ON EASTER SUNDAY, 1849, AND DEPARTED THIS LIFE THE 18 DAY OF DECEMBER, 1883, AGED 57 YEARS AND 9 DAYS. SHE WAS THE MOTHER OF ELEVEN CHILDREN, TWO PRECEDED HER IN DEATH AND NINE SURVIVE HER...IT WAS HER LOT TO HAVE THE DEATH-BED ARE OF HER FATHER-IN-LAW AND ALSO THAT OF HER MOTHER-IN-LAW, WHICH LATTER'S AFFLICTION LASTED FOR SEVERAL YEARS. HER HERCULEAN STRENGTH AT LAST GAVE WAY AND SHE FELL VICTIM TO A COMPLICATED FEMALE DISEARS, AND EMALINE IS NO MORE. SHE JOINED THE METHODIST E. CHURCH, SOUTH, SOME THIRTY YEARS AGO...TEN DAYS BEFORE HER DEATH, WHEN AN AUNT VISITED HER IN HER AFLICTION, AND WHILE THE AUNT WAS BOWED IN PRAYER IN BEHALF OF THE AFFLICTED ONE, THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME DOWN AND EMALINE SHOUTED THE PRAISE OF GOD EVEN ON A DEATH BED. THE MORNING SHE DIED THAT SAME AUNT VISITED HER AGAIN, AND SAID TO HER, "EMALINE, DO YOU KNOW ME?" "YES, AUNT CLEMMA." "DO YOU STILL FEEL THAT JESUS IS WITH YOU?" "OH YES, YES," AND CLOSED HER EYES FOREVER...SHE LEAVES MANY DEAR FRIENDS TO MOURN HER LOSS, AND AMONG THEM IS AN AFFLICTED HUSBAND, WHO IS AFFLICTED WITH RHEUMATISM AND PARALYSIS. HE IS TRULY AN OBJECT OF PITY AND SYMPATHY. HE HAD TO BE CARRIED BESIDE THE COFFIN TO TAKE A LAST LOOK AT HIS DEPARTED WIFE... SHE WAS BURIED AT UNION CEMETERY....REV. J.R. CUMMINGHAM CONDUCTED RELIGIOUS SERVICES BOTH AT THE HOUSE OF THE DECEASED AND ALSO AT THE CEMETERY. HOLSTON RIVER, E. TENN., DEC. 31, 1883, J.G.
