BIRTH, DEATH INFORMATION FROM RICHARD HARKLEROAD CIVIL WAR PENSION APPLICATION # 10657 ON LDS FILM 0969675. HE ENLISTED BUT BECAUSE OF WEAK EYES WAS DETAILED TO RUN A SAW MILL FOR THE CONFEDERACY. THE LUMBER FROM THE MILL WAS USED TO REPAIR RAILROAD TRACKS ON THE EAST TENNESSEE, VIRGINIA & GEORGIA RAILROAD BEING RUN BY THE CONFEDERACY. IN A LETTER IN THE FILE, JAMES I. HARKLEROAD NAMES THE SAW MILL AS THE HARKLEROAD SAW MILL, LOCATED ABOUT ONE MILE UP THE RIVER FROM BLUFF CITY,TN. IN 1910 HE APPLIED FOR A PENSION BECAUSE HE WAS BLIND (AND HAD BEEN FOR 30 YEARS ACCORDING TO HIS TESTIMONY) AND COULD NOT WORK. HE STATES THAT HIS WIFE WAS DEAD AND THAT HE MOVED AMONG HIS CHILDREN TO LIVE. HE WAS ADMITTED TO THE SOLDIERS HOME IN NASHVILLE,ON 12 JULY 1910. DURING A VISIT HOME HE BECAME TOO FEEBLE TO RETURN. HE LIVED WITH HIS DAUGHTER, MRS. A. J. ROE, WHO TOOK CARE OF HIM. A LETTER FROM W.D. LYON REQUESTS A SUM OF TEN DOLLARS PER MONTH FOR MRS. ROE TO HELP HER MEET EXPENSES.
