[download.ged.FTW] [ball.ftw] [WJD.FTW.1.FTW] JOHN, 3, PETTY (James,2; John, 1), son of James P etty and Mary (Lawton) Petty. Probably Yeoman [rrp note: farmer] of Swansea, Mass; was born 5 Jan. 1684 at Springfield, Mass. He died before 2 Feb. 1756, probably Swansea, Mass; married at Little Compton, R, I. (then in Mass.) in 1 710, Hannah Closson, of Swansea, Mass. Hannah Closson was daughter of Josiah and Mary (Williamson) Closson; she was born at Little Compton, R.I. 31 Augu st 1690; died probably Swansea, Mass., af ter 1 Feb. 1714-15. John, 3, Petty resided in Swansea Mass. The children of John, 3, Petty are not readily iden tified. He had 3 clildren born in Swansea, Mass. according to the vital recor ds and almost certainly a son JOHN not found on the birth records and there i s no evidence of any other children. ((See below:1715-1720.)) CHRONOLOGICAL DATES OF RECORD PERTAINING TO JOHN, 3, PETTY: 5 Jan. 1684: He was born in Spri ngfield, Mass. He was the eldest son and child of James,2,Petty. 1710: He ma rried in Little Compton, R.I. (then in Mass.). That he is the same man born a t Springfield, Mass. 5 Jan. 1684 appears readily established by the following : 1. his father, James,2, Petty, was then residing in Freetown, Mass., nearb y. 2. he was the sole John Petty available for this marriage 3. his 3 childre n recorded were born at Swansea, Mass. near Freetown, Mass. 4. the deed of h is son, Nathan Petty, whose birth was recorded in Swansea, Mass. dated 2 Feb 1756 states that "Nathan Petty of Tiverton ...Yeoman" was "the Eldest Son of John Petty which was the Eldest Son of James Petty formerly of Springfield in Conn., alias the Massachusetts Bay in new England". ((This last item being d ecisive.)) 17 Jan. 1711-12: His son Nathan was born at Swansea. He was the eld est son and child of John Petty 10 July 1713: His daughter Hannah was born at Swansea, Mass. 1 Feb. 1714-15: His daughter Martha was born at Swansea, Mas s. 1715-1720: Only above 3 children recorded on the vital records. But it ap pears that he (John,3) had at least one more child - a son, John Petty Jr., who was probably born at Swansea, Mass. between 1715 and 1720 who is the J ohn Pety who married at Swansea, Mass., 25 Oct.1739, Sarah Commines both of Swansea. ((Only this John, 3, Petty appears possible as the father of this Jo hn Petty married in 1739.)) 2 Feb. 1756: His eldest son Nathan deeded away his rights by quit claim deed that he had acquired from his father "John Petty which was the Eldest Son of James Petty formerly of Springfield," etc. ((Thi s deed is conclusive evidence of the death of John Petty for otherwise he wou ld have been party to this deed rather than his son. The fact that his two daughters, Hannah & Martha, were residing in Swansea, Mass. in 1737, the yea r they both married, would be very strong evidence that the family was then residing in that town, although it does not indicate whether John Petty was l iving or dead at that time. He left no estate in Bristol County, Mass., and h e was not a party to a single deed on record in either Bristol County, Mass., or Hampshire County, Mass, and this is doubtless the reason why he left no e state. As there is no evidence whatever to indicate that he removed from Swan sea, Mass., it is assumed that he died in that town.)) There is less known of this particular generation of this lineage than of any of the other genera tions, which is due primarily to the fact that he was not a party to any deed s anywhere, left no estate and left records only of his marriage and the bir ths of three children. An examination of both deeds and probate records under the names of the two husbands of his two daughters (Hannah and Martha) produ ced no information of the slightest importance. Except for the three childre n whose births are found in the records of Swansea Mass. and the almost certa in son John, Jr., whose birth date was not rec

Nathan, 4, Petty a cordwainer (shoe-ma ker), laborer, and yeoman [farmer] of Tiverton, R, I.; Dartmouth and and Wes tport, Mass, He was the eldest son and child. Mary Gifford was probably the daughter of Stephen (Robert, 2; William, l) Gifford and Mary (maiden name not known) Gifford; probably born at Dartmouth, Mass., 12 Aug. 1724; died place unknown after 27 Jan, 1763. CHRONOLOGICAL DATES OF RECORD RELATING TO NATHAN, 4, PETTY: 25 March 1747: "Nathan Pettey" of Tiverton, R. I., cordwainer, bou ght land. ((His earliest deed.)) 11 Dec. 1747: "Nathan Pettey of Tiverton .. ..cordwainer" sold land. ((Ibid 1:2) 2 Feb. 1756: "Nathan Petty of Tiverton ... yeoman the Eldest Son of John Petty which was the Eldest Son of James Pet ty formerly of Springfield," etc., quitclaimed to William Petty of Richmond, R. This deed was signed by "Nathan Petty" and it was witnessed by Joseph Petty, Mark of Recompence Gifford and Samuel Hicks. It w as acknowledged on 3 Feb. 1756 by Nathan Petty before Samuel Hicks, Jus: Peac e, probably in Tiverton, R. I., and recorded on 27 Feb.1756 by Edwd. Pynchon, Regr. ((Y/299-300)). NOTE: See photostatic copy. This is by far the most imp ortant single document in the entire Petty lineage, as it clearly ties togeth er the first four generations of the lineage of Nathan,4,Petty (John,3; James ,2;John 1). Not only that but it states clearly that "Nathan Petty of Tiverto n" was "the Eldest Son of John Petty which was the Eldest Son of James Petty formerly of Springfield." This deed has resulted in completion of the entire Petty lineage in this country. As the deed was witnessed by three Tiverton m en and acknowledged before one of them, it was undoubtedly made and acknowled ged in that town. ((Ibi d,ll)) 1777: "Nathan Pettey" listed in 1777 Military Census of Tiverton, R.I ., as aged "Upwards of 60 years." 1782: No Nathan Petty listed in the Census of R. No one of that name was listed in the State of R. I. in 1790. 1798: "Nathan Petty" listed in Westport , Mass. in the Direct Tax Lists.
