Pettys, Sr., was awarded his membership in the Sons of t he American Revolution through Nathan Petty. ---- NATHAN, 4, PETTY (John , 3; James, 2; John, 1) son of John, 3, Petty and Hannah (Closson) Petty, wa s born at Swansea, Mass. 17 Jan. 1711-12; he died at Westport, Mass, before 2 6 May 1809 when the appraisers of his estate were appointed - at nearly 97 ye ars, 4 months and 9 days of age; he married at Tiverton, Mass. (now R.I.) 19 August 1742, Mary Gifford of Tiverton. Nathan, 4, Petty a cordwainer (shoe-ma ker), laborer, and yeoman [farmer] of Tiverton, R, I.; Dartmouth and and Wes tport, Mass, He was the eldest son and child. Mary Gifford was probably the daughter of Stephen (Robert, 2; William, l) Gifford and Mary (maiden name not known) Gifford; probably born at Dartmouth, Mass., 12 Aug. 1724; died place unknown after 27 Jan, 1763. CHRONOLOGICAL DATES OF RECORD RELATING TO NATHAN, 4, PETTY: 25 March 1747: "Nathan Pettey" of Tiverton, R. I., cordwainer, bou ght land. ((His earliest deed.)) 11 Dec. 1747: "Nathan Pettey of Tiverton .. ..cordwainer" sold land. ((Ibid 1:2) 2 Feb. 1756: "Nathan Petty of Tiverton ... yeoman the Eldest Son of John Petty which was the Eldest Son of James Pet ty formerly of Springfield," etc., quitclaimed to William Petty of Richmond, R. I. "all the Estate.... which Nathan Petty Ever had ...to all .... the Tr acts of land meadows Commons Commonages Town Rights.... which my sd. Grand Fa ther Died Seized abd. Possessed ... of ... in ... Springfield or any other To wns near in new England". This deed was signed by "Nathan Petty" and it was witnessed by Joseph Petty, Mark of Recompence Gifford and Samuel Hicks. It w as acknowledged on 3 Feb. 1756 by Nathan Petty before Samuel Hicks, Jus: Peac e, probably in Tiverton, R. I., and recorded on 27 Feb.1756 by Edwd. Pynchon, Regr. ((Y/299-300)). NOTE: See photostatic copy. This is by far the most imp ortant single document in the entire Petty lineage, as it clearly ties togeth er the first four generations of the lineage of Nathan,4,Petty (John,3; James ,2;John 1). Not only that but it states clearly that "Nathan Petty of Tiverto n" was "the Eldest Son of John Petty which was the Eldest Son of James Petty formerly of Springfield." This deed has resulted in completion of the entire Petty lineage in this country. As the deed was witnessed by three Tiverton m en and acknowledged before one of them, it was undoubtedly made and acknowled ged in that town. This is the single deed in Hampshire County, Mass., to wh ich this Nathan Petty was a party.)) 27 Jan. 1763 1 Feb.1763 17 Apr.1764 19 jan.1768 1Oct. 1773 (These are dates of other deeds for land in Tiverton and Dartmouth, Mass.) 1774: "Nathan Pettes" listed in 1774 Cenus of Tiverton, R. I., and he was the only one of that name in the Colony of Rhode Island. ((Ibi d,ll)) 1777: "Nathan Pettey" listed in 1777 Military Census of Tiverton, R.I ., as aged "Upwards of 60 years." 1782: No Nathan Petty listed in the Census of R. I. in 1782 and he had doubtless removed to Dartmouth, Mass. by this ye ar. 1790: "Nathan Pettis" listed in the 1790 Census of Westport, Mass., and he was the only man of that name listed in the state. No one of that name was listed in the State of R. I. in 1790. 1798: "Nathan Petty" listed in Westport , Mass. in the Direct Tax Lists.
