The second Sir John married, at the age of 20, Jean Thorlan d, with whom
he had five ch ildren. In 1502, the turbulent r elations between England
and Scotland ebbed with the signin g of a peace treaty by Henry VII and
his Scottish counterpa r t, James IV. The pact lasted less than a decade,
but an ev ent which accompan ied the signing had a more lasting effec t -
the negotiation of a marriage be tween James and Henry' s young daughter,
Margaret. Sir John was one of 200 me n wh o escorted the betrothed
princess through Nottingham to Sco tland in 150 2. As Sir John died that
year at the age of 28 , it can be assumed that his d eath was a result of
the 30 0 mile journey to Edinburgh. The significance of this marri age
was not realized for another century when, upon the dea th of Elizabeth I
of England in 1603, their great-grandso n would become heir to th e
thrones of both England and Scot land, thus uniting all of Great Britain
under one crown.
