1912
Levi W. Davis
Highly Respected Resident of Waterbury Passed Away Friday Night.
Levi W. Davis died at his home on High Street last Friday night at midnight. Although suffering from heart trouble, his serious illness was of short duration, pneumonia being the immediate cause of his death. He was born in Westminster, Ontario, October 23, 1845. He was educated in the common schools there and after he was 21 came to Vermont and continued in school, teaching part of the time. Forty years ago he married in Richmond Miss Adeline Smith. They have lived in their present home 22 years. For 19 years Mr. Davis was employed at the Vermont State Hospital for the Insane, 18 of that time as night watchman.
Mr. Davis was a citizen who always stood for high ideals, and his influence always went for what was right. In his home life, as a husband, father and grandfather, he truly measured up to the standard of what the head of a home should be and always did his part, and did it willingly and cheerfully.
In his church life, as a member of the Methodist Church he was always willing to aid the society in every way, and nearly every Sunday could be found in his pew, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. Edward Chesley, Mrs. Percy Brown and Mrs. S. W. Guptil of this town, Luther Davis of Providence, R.I., and Mrs. W.H. Douglass of Northfield. There are also eight grandchildren and two sisters, a brother and a half-brother, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, Mrs. Albert Stranton, George Davis and James Davis, all living near London, Ontario.
The funeral was held from his late home on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 oclock. Rev. E.F. Newell officiated. W. J. Boyce, assisted by V. L. Perkins, was in charge. The bearers were S. W. Guptil, Edward Chesley, Percy L. Brown of this place, William H. Douglass of Northfield, Charles Smith of Dighton, Mass., and Frank Smith of Essex Junction. The burial was in the village cemetery.
The floral tributes were large, plainly showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held by the people of Waterbury and surrounding towns.
