Joseph W. Robb, p. 558
JOSEPH W. ROBB. Among those undaunted pioneers who braved the hardships and dangers of frontier life to make a home in Washington county, Joseph Robb (grandfather of the present family) and his wife deserve an honored place. Joseph Robb was born and reared in Chester county, Penn., and was married to a native of the same State. Soon after their union the couple came to Washington county, in 1790, purchasing of the government and moving upon a tract consisting of 400 acres, known as the "Omi tract". A log cabin was soon erected and improvements energetically begun by the stout-hearted young settler, who often carried salt over the mountains on horseback. Time passed on, and as the rude uncultivated land was transformed into fields of moving grain, the little home took on an air of comfort and civilization. Children as follows were born to these pioneers: Ebenezer, William, and John, and as the parents grew weary with the weight of years, strong young arms and brave young hearts lifted the burdens from their shoulders. Joseph Robb was a member and elder of the Associated Reformed Church, and in politics voted with the whig party. He died April 14, 1847, and was buried by the side of his wife in the cemetery of Robinson's Run church. Ebenezer Robb, the eldest son of Joseph, was born July 9, 1803, and was reared and educated on the home farm. On January 26, 1836, he was united in marriage with Eliza Wallace, who was born near Pigeon creek, daughter of Robert Wallace. The young people made a permanent home in Robinson township, this county, where he followed farming and stock raising. Five children were born to their union, namely: William and Joseph (both now deceased); Robert (a prominent businessman in Allegheny City, and is an elder in the Westminster Church of that place)); Joseph W. and Mary E. (wife of Joseph Reynolds). The father of this family was formerly a member of the Associate Reformed Church of Robinson's Run, and afterwards joined the United Presbyterian Church at McDonald, serving as an elder in both Societies. In politics he was originally a Whig, afterward a Republican. He took an active interest in educational matters, and served as justice of the peace two terms. Mr. Robb died in August, 1884, having been preceded to the grave by his wife in 1877, and their remains rest in the cemetery at Robinson's run. Joseph W. Robb was born May 18, 1851, on the old homestead in Robinson township. His elementary education was received at the common schools of the neighborhood, and he afterward became a student in the Allegheny City Academy. On November 27, 1879, Mr. Robb married Rachel Lindsey, a daughter of William Lindsey, who was born in 1811, in Mt. Pleasant township, this county, where his earlier years were passed. He was married to Ann Van Eman, a resident of this county, and the young people remained in Mt. Pleasant township till 1876, the following children being born to their union: Sarah, John, Elizabeth, Van Eman, Anna, Rebecca, Marguerita, Irene, Robert, and Rachel (Mrs. Robb). Mr. Lindsey was an extensive sealer in stock, and in politics voted with the republican party. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He died in 1883; his widow is yet living with her children. Joseph and Rachel (Lindsey) Robb settled on the paternal homestead, where their children have been born as follows: Edmund E., born August 31, 1881; Anna Ethel, born September 2, 1883, died January 7, 1885; Mary Margretta, born August 9, 1886; Laura Ellen, born October 24, 1888, and Joseph Lloyd, born December 19, 1892. Mr. Robb is an active republican, has served his township in various capacities, and has now entered upon his second term as school director. He and his family are members of the United Presbyterian Church at McDonald, in which he is an elder.

Robinson Twp. (pp. 900-910)

This township is the eleventh in the original thirteen township formed by the trustees appointed under the act erecting the county of Washington. It began its legal existence on the 15th of July, 1781.
From the erection of the township in 1781 is was an independent and separate district till May 4, 1803, when it became part (with Smith township) of District No. 4, and so continued until 1838, when it again became a separate and independent district. The names of justices of the peace having jurisdiction in Robinson during the time it was a part of District No. 4 (1803 to 1838) will be found in the list for Smith township. The names of the justices prior to 1803 and after 1838 are give, viz.: Robert McBirney, Aug, 14,1846

James McBirney and his son John, natives of Ireland, emigrated to this country at the close of the Revolution, and settled east of the mountains. It was not until 1814 they came to this county, and on the 15th of February of that year James purchased one hundred and forty-three acres of land of William McClain. James McBirney sold this place to his son John, who lived and died upon the place. He had three sons,-James, John, and Robert. James resided on the homestead, and left it to his son, John R. McBirney, who still owns it. A part of the Robbins Block Coal Company's works are on his lands. John now lives in Hickory. Robert lived on the tract, "Blackberry Plains," his grandfather, James McBirney bought later (and where he passed the remainder of his days). It is now owned by Mrs. Robert McBirney, and occupied by William Dixon, a son-in-law.
Pittsburgh and Walnut Hill Coal Company. - In 1869, E. A. Wheeler, of Sharon, Pa., and Rapalye & Gulick, of New York, purchased six hundred acres of the Johnston, Elder, and McBirney tracts.
Village of Candor.-The land on which this village is located was part of a tract taken up by Col. Samuel Beelor on a Virginia certificate in 1780, he having settled there in 1774. The cause of the settlement of people at this place was that the Raccoon Church was located here. But few habitations were erected here before 1817. At that time the Rev. Moses Allen became the pastor of the church, and it was by him the village was begun. His son, Watson Allen, started the first store. It is related of him that while buying goods in Philadelphia he was asked the address to sent them to. After a little thought he replied "Candor, Washing Co." The goods were sent, and the name became generally adopted. A post-office was established, and the following have been postmasters: ...Benjamin Kelso, ...

Robbins Block Coal Company. - In 1873, T. Burr Robbins purchased two hundred acres of the Jacob George and Cochran farms, and that portion of the John McBirney farm lying south of the railroad. Operations commenced in 1874, and a main entry opened in 1875 that extends at present (1881) about one-third of a mile southerly. Five side drifts extend east and five west. In 1881, Mr. Robbins purchased two hundred acres of coal right from the Kelso farm.

George Kelso, p. 946
GEORGE KELSO. Among the early residents of Cecil township were Benjamin and Mary (McCormick) Kelso, who settled in Allegheny county, Penn., about the year 1800. Benjamin Kelso served seven years and nine months in the Revolutionary war, and died from disease contracted while in the service. Benjamin Kelso, a son of the pioneer couple above mentioned, was born in 1801, and reared in Allegheny county, Penn., where he received his education. In 1823 he was united in marriage with Martha, daughter of John Murdock, an early pioneer of Allegheny county, who afterward moved to Ohio, dying there many years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Kelso settled on the old homestead in Allegheny county, Penn., where he died in 1880, being followed to the grave by his wife in 1888. They reared the following family of children: Rebecca (married in 1836 to Cornelius Borland, now living in Cecil township, this county), John (a resident of Allegheny county, Penn., married to Mary Hall), Mary (wife of Richard Gladden), George (whose sketch follows), James (living in Pasadena, Cal.), Nancy (married to William Herron, of Noblestown), Margaret, Martha (wife of John P. McConnell), Benjamin (residing on the homestead in Allegheny county), Mark (living in North Strabane township), Samuel (residing in Xenia, Ohio) and Elizabeth. Of these are yet living Rebecca, George, James, Benjamin, Mark and Samuel. The father was a Whig and Republican in politics, and in religious faith he and his wife were formerly members of the Associate Reformed Church at Robinson's Run, afterward uniting with the U. P. Church at the same place. George Kelso, son of Benjamin and Martha (Murdock) Kelso, was born April 28, 1822, in South Fayette township, Allegheny Co., Penn., attending the subscription schools of the day during his boyhood. He began farming on the old homestead, and June 1, 1852, was married to Sarah Jane Wallace also a native of Allegheny county, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Gilfilland) Wallace. The parents were natives of eastern Pennsylvania, coming when children with their parents to Allegheny county, where they were married. They were both members of the United Presbyterian Church at Robinson's Run, and Mr. Wallace was for some years a member of the Session. He died in 1884, being followed by his wife a few years later. His son William lives at the old home. George and Sarah Jane Kelso passed the first years of married life in Allegheny county, and in 1857 bought 178 acres in Cecil township, Washington county. He has made many improvements on the place, and in 1881 erected a comfortable house; in addition to general farming he raises a good grade of sheep. He is a Republican in politics, and has served his township as inspector of elections and auditor. In religious faith Mr. and Mrs. Kelso are members of the U. P. Church at Venice. They have had children, five of whom are yet living, as follows: James, a teacher in North Strabane township, married to Lizzie McNary; William Wallace, married to Anna A., daughter of Rev. Anderson, and living on the home farm; Benjamin McCormick, married to Mary Miller, a resident of Pasadena, Cal.; George A., a farmer; and John, a bookkeeper, in Pittsburgh. Those deceased are Lizzie, who died in 1854, aged fifteen months; Maggie, who died in 1872, aged seven years; Sarah Bella, who died in 1876, aged fifteen years; and Mattie, deceased in 1880, aged twenty-one years.

Subject: ROBB surnamed ancestry research
Hello,
My name is Don French & I am trying to connect several branchs of ROBB surnamed folks that are my distant ancestors. I found five people in Ancestry.com, OneWorldTree and decided that I would send an email to each of them asking the same questions.
The information I have is in some cases scant, in some cases modest and in one case rather extensive, however, Ive been unable to find any common link, except in a very tenuous way, to link these folks together. I have also been unable to follow these folks back from whence they came or to ascertain who their parents/siblings were.
My earliest known ROBB ancestor is an emigrant, Joseph ROBB and his sons John, William & Andrew, who came to Lancaster Co. Pa., around 1740.
Possibly related to this line is an Andrew ROBB, who in 1850, was an elderly gentleman farming a plot of land next to my 2nd gr. grandfather, Ross TAGGART who was farming in Raccoon Twp., Beaver Co. Pa.
Next is a Joseph ROBB, b. Dec 1808 in Pa., possibly in Beaver Co., who married Mary Ann RAMBO in Mar 1834 in Muskingum Co. Ohio. The couple had two children and Mary Ann died. Joseph then married Hannah TAGGART, sister of Ross TAGGART around 1840 in Ohio and they had four children, with the last child being born in Monroe Co. Iowa in Feb 1850, the others being born in or around Logan Co. Ohio. In a Civil War Pension File record, it is recorded that Joseph ROBBs fathers name was Andrew and that Joseph ROBB had a brother Andrew, married to a Jane ??. There was also an uncle to Joseph ROBB named James M. ROBB who, in 1891, was 55 years old and a Justice of the Peace in Albia, Monroe Co., Iowa.
Joseph ROBB married for a third time to a Nancy MCDONALD in Monroe Co. Iowa in Jun 1863. There were no children from this marriage and Joseph ROBB then moved to Oregon, then Washington, where he died in Aug 1900 and is buried in Tacoma, Wash.
Finally, there is George ROBB, b. circa. 1796 in Pa., married Jane GEORGE in Sep. 1829 and they had seven children. George died in Nov 1861 and is buried in Washington Co. Pa. where he lived with his family at least since 1850.
I am in possession of a copy of a letter written some time in the 1930s wherein it is stated that the Andrew ROBB living in Beaver Co. Pa. in 1850 is the father of Joseph ROBB who married Hannah TAGGART, but of this I have no proof.
What I am trying to ascertain is whether or not the emigrant Joseph ROBB, thru his sons listed above or thru additional sons, poss. another Joseph and a Samuel are the direct ancestors of the Andrew ROBB living in Beaver Co. Pa. in 1850 and is the Andrew ROBB living in Beaver Co. Pa. in 1850 the father of Joseph ROBB who married Hannah TAGGART. Further, I would like to find out about any additional siblings of the Joseph ROBB who married Hannah TAGGART as well as trying to find out how and when this family got to Ohio.
Also, George ROBB who was born in 1796. How is he connected to this family? Is he related to Joseph the emigrant thru one of the sons?
James M. ROBB who was the Justice of the Peace. Does anyone know who his parents and siblings where?
So there you have my dilemma. I have additional information about the children of Joseph and Mary Ann RAMBO, Joseph & Hannah TAGGART and I have the names and some history on the children of George ROBB & Jane GEORGE and I am more than willing to share what I have.
Thanks for reading this rather long message.

In ref. to George ROBB & Jane GEORGE. I have the 1850 & 1860 Pa. Fed. Cen., Washington Co. information. I received info. from a GEORGE website on rootweb stating that George ROBB was b. in 1796, m. Jane GEORGE 22 Sep 1829 and that the couple had seven kids, named.
I found a article on interment/pa/Washington Co./Covenanter Cem. stating that George ROBB died 18 Nov 1861 at 65 years of age and he is buried with Jane G. in row #2.
When I found this info. I was looking for information about Jane GEORGE as Laura Jeanette GEORGE was my 2nd gr. grandmother and I was trying to find out more about the GEORGE surname.
I dont have a copy of the manuscript of the descendants of George ROBB & Jane GEORGE, nor until your message, did I even know of its existence. As to Beers on-line history of Washington Co., Pa. I was only able to find one article on a Joseph W. ROBB on page 558 and that has no reference to George & Jane or any other ROBB that Im working on as far as I could tell.
Any information you might have concerning George & Jane and would be willing to share, would be greatly appreciated. I would be more than willing to pay you to photo copy any of your information, including any notes you would be willing to share and I would send you a SASE so you could send the information to me.
I figure if I collect enough information, and use that information to find additional information, I will eventually figure out where each of these ROBB surnamed folks fit into the overall picture.
I would dearly love to visit your PIERSON/PORTER website on Ancestry or rootsweb, but after spending several minutes trying to tell Ancestry to find the PIERSON/PORTER family web site, with no success, I decided to ask you if you know how one goes about looking up a specific tree by its name?
Well enough for now. The wife and son have decided to take me out to diner and Im not one to turn down a diner, whether I pay for it or not. J

Subject: Follow-up on Robb research
Hello again Laurie,
Well all I can say is WOW, what a tremendous amount of information you have gathered on the Pierson/Porter web site. It took me days and scores of family group sheets, to record all of the information.
I had most of the information about Robert George and his descendents, the one area where I have conflicting information has to do with Samuel George & his wife Christiana George. You have daughters Lizzie & Emma as the 5th & 6th children. In my research (see attachment, which I hope is readable), Im fairly well convinced that they are one and the same. In the 1880, 1900 & 1920 Pa. Cen. there is Emma L., Lizzie E. & Emma L. all with her living with Samuel. An Emma Lizzie George is buried in the Beaver Cem. born 1878 d. 4 Apr 1966, 87 years old. An obit lists her as Miss. Emma L. George. I havent found both a Lizzie and an Emma as separate subjects in any document Ive found so far, so Ive concluded that they are one and the same. If youve found any additional information to show both as separate individuals, please let me know and Ill amend my genealogical file immediately.
In the email you sent to me on Sunday the 19th of June, along with the Robert GEORGE descendancy chart, was a paragraph stating that George ROBB was the fourth child of James & Jane (GEORGE) ROBB, but the Ancestry.com list shows him as the third child with Jane ROBB being born in 1800. Do you have anything on this?
Can you advise the extent of the manuscript on the descendants of George ROBB & Jane GEORGE? I would dearly love to have a copy of it for my library for research purposes, if at all possible. I was able to obtain a copy of a short manuscript entitled, One Hundred and Fifty Years of the GEORGE Family 1735-1885 which is a record of the GEORGE Family Reunion in 1885 and it has to do with the descendants of Thomas GEORGE, and his sons Robert & Alexander. Its fascinating reading, however, it is not of much use for genealogical purposes as it has almost no information concerning lineage. Its mostly letters written to the folks gathered at the reunion expressing their regrets about not being able to attend, with a few letters telling the historical records of Thomas, Robert & Alexander GEORGE. There is a list of about 400+ names of people who were at the reunion, but its just a list of names, no connection as to who is married to whom, or who came with whom or any relationship whatsoever. Strangely enough there were no ROBB surnamed people in attendance.
I thank you so much for answering my email. You have been of tremendous help and assistance. Please let me know if I can get a copy of the manuscript and if I can be of any assistance to you in any way let me know and Ill do my best to help.
As I read further in the Pierson/Porter web site, Im sure Ill have questions, so dont even think this is a see you later message. J
Don

Subject: Robb Descendants follow-up

Hi Laurie
Well, it took a lot of time and over 150 family group sheets, but I finally entered almost all of the information in the ROBB, The Descendants of George ROBB & Jane GEORGE into my PAF file. I am amazed and astonished as to the amount of information included by this couple. It must have taken a lot of time, effort and dedication to amass the information. The question that first came to my mind was, with all of this effort, they must have discovered the occupation of many of the subjects and where the marriages, deaths and births took place, but it was not included.
All I can say is WOW I certainly hope someone in the family was able to save all of the documentation that was collected and hopefully it still exists.
Now, to my questions. I realize that you may not have answers to some of them, but here goes anyway. The page numbers I refer to are the ones hand written in the lower right corner of each page
1. The authors, G.M.& Ruth. Would this be George Mackey ROBB & Ruth M. RUSSELL, shown on page 16 & 17?
2. Page 5, a Rev. J.K. ROBB, D.D. is mentioned as publishing a book in 1944, could this be James K. ROBB, who married Winifred TURNER on pg. 12 and after the death of Winifred, married Helen STEUSSIE on pg. 13?
