Clear Lake, Iowa obituaries:
Dec 1908
"A Mexican Veteran Dead.
At the ripe old age of eighty-three years, Wesley Benner ends his earthly life. On Saturday morning, December 5, 1908, soon after eating his breakfast he passed peacefully away, while sitting in his arm chair, at his home on East Main street, in Clear Lake, Iowa. The deceased was born in Licking county, Ohio, October 10, 1825, growing to young manhood in the parental home. When twenty years of age he went to St. Joseph, Missouri, to live with an uncle, remaining most of two years. In 1846, he enlisted in the army for the Mexican war, serving a year. Upon his return the family removed to Indiana and settled there. It was in 1849 that he met and married Miss Maria Louisa Bean, on the eleventh of November. The new home was made in Miami county, Indiana. In 1855, they came to Iowa, settling first in Louisa county, and later, in 1872, in Cerro Gordo county. For thirty-six years he has lived continuously in this community, a highly respected citizen.
The wife of his youth died in May 1883, having been the mother of nine children, six boys and three girls. Of these only two remain to bury the aged father - O.A. Benner and Mrs. Tice.
In 1885, a second marriage occurred with Mrs. Celeste Bell, who survives her husband and is at present with a daughter in California, having gone there about a year ago in search of better health.
The deceased was converted to the Christian life about 1865, since which time he has been a faithful Christian and a loyal member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. T.S.Bassett, were held in the M.E. church Monday afternoon.
