R. CHARLES C. GAFFORD is a leading and prominent physician and surgeon in Wymore. His father, Joseph Gafford, was born in Baltimore, Md., in 1822. He received a common-school education in the city of his birth, and while still a young man he went to LaFayette, Ind., where he was for many years engaged in the furniture business. In 1873 he removed with his family to White Cloud, Kan., where he continued in the same business until about 1880, when he bought a farm eight miles north of Hiawatha, Kan., on which he still lives. He married Miss Doreas Sherwood, and to them have been born eleven children, ten of whom are still living, viz: William, Delia, Anna, Alvin, Charles C. (our subject), Elizabeth, John, George, James and Daniel. Dr. Gafford was born on the 3d of April, 1860, in Des Moines, Iowa, and when he was a small child his parents moved to Rensselaer, Ind., thence to Burlington, Kan., and again, to White Cloud. In Burlington our subject began the pursuit of his education, supplementing it with a High School course at White Cloud, after which he began the study of medicine in the year 1877 with Dr. J. Bussing, of Hiawatha, Kan. He took a course of lectures in 1879-80, and another course in 1880-81, at Keokuk, Iowa, being graduated on the 3d of March in the class of '81. Immediately after his graduation our subject came to Wymore and began the practice of his profession, where he continued for two years, when he completed his professional knowledge by a course at the New York Polyclinic in the spring of 1883. Then he returned to Wymore, and has continued his practice up to the present time, having become a prominent surgeon in this vicinity, also
being the surgeon for the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad, and examiner for all the old-time insurance companies doing business in Wymore. Dr. Gafford was elected to the State Legislature in 1886, on the Republican ticket, serving as Chairman of the Committee on Asylums, also on the Committee of Labor, his term as yet unexpired. He is quite a young man, and has an excellent beginning for a life of prominence and usefulness. Mrs. Gafford was formerly Miss Mary Fenton, of Randolph, N. Y.

History of Gage County, Nebraska : a narrative of the past, with special emphasis upon the pioneer period of the county's history, its social, commercial, educational, religious, and civic development from the early days to the present time Lincoln, Neb.: Western Pub. and Engraving Co., 1918, 1102 pgs
Charles C. Gafford, M.D., was the first physician to locate in what is now the city of Wymore, Gage county. Dr. Gafford was born at Des Moines, Iowa, February 23, 1860, a son of James (sic) and Dorcas (Sherwood) Gafford, natives of Maryland and New York, respectively. The marriage of the parents was solemnized in Ohio and the father thereafter was engaged in the furniture and undertaking business in Des Moines, Iowa; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Hiawatha, Kansas. He died in Kansas, at the age of eighty-four years, and his wife was seventy-two years of age when she was called to her final rest. Dr. Charles C. Gafford was one of a family of eleven children and his boyhood days were spent largely at Hiawatha, Kansas, where he attended the public schools. He prepared for his profession at the Keokuk medical College, Keokuk, Iowa, in which institution he was graduated in 1881. In that year he came to Wymore, then a new town, and here he had the distinction of becoming the first physician and surgeon of the vital little village, which has been developed into a fine community.
Dr. Gafford has taken a keen interest in all civic affairs of the community and has served as mayor of Wymore. In 1887-1888 he represented Gage County in the lower house of the state legislature, in which he served as chairman of the committee on asylums. Along strictly professional lines he is a member of the American Medical Assocition, the Gage County Medical Society and the International Association of Railroad Surgeons. For thirty-six years Dr. Gafford has been division surgeon for the Burlington Railroad, and this is a longer continuous service than that of any other Burlington Surgeon west of the Missouri river.
Dr. Gafford married Miss Mary Fenton, a native of New York. They have one child, Miss Grace.

Dr. Gafford was the victim of a heart attack and was discovered in his room by his nurse and housekeeper, Carrie Schope, on her return from a short trip to town to obtain provisions. Dr. Gafford had what he believed to be a slight attack of indigestion the night before but physicians pronounced it the beginning of the cardiac condition which caused his death.Dr. Gafford operated hospitals in Cheyenne Wells and Sharon Springs for a number of years before moving to Hugo in January 1923 (??1928??). In 1931, he moved to Manitou Springs, but shortly afterward went to California. He returned to make his home in Colorado Springs in 1933. Dr. Gafford lived in eastern Kansas many years, where he was a railroad physician. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. A.T. Schallmann, Grand Island, Nebr., and three brothers.
