Dear Laurie Hello there. I, too, have reason to belive that I am descended from Mary Orr and Richard Woodcock. This hunt has been so long, almost 6 months. Here is how I have it: Richard Derek Woodcock and Mary Ann Orr had at least one son, Henry Houghtaling Woodcock, who married Ellen Bruce. They had four children, not in birth order, Walter Scott, Levi Houghtaling, Robert Emerson and Jennie Woodcock. Walter Scott Woodcock is my grandfather. He was born about 1860 something. They had 12 children. My mother is # 2. Robert and Levi both married, but neither had children. Jennie married and had one son, Dan Thomas was his name, and their son was Gay Thomas. It is also in a family letter that Mary Ann Orr married a man whose name was Tobias, with whom she had a son named Jim, who drowned off a raft as a child. I am looking for a Lewis Woodcock, who some of my aunts and uncles referred to as "Old Lou Henry". No record of this man appears in any family papers I have, but one of my aunts has a photo of him. He was a vet of the Civil War. Ellen Bruce was one of the daughters of Olive Small and Joseph Bruce, her second husband (her first was Hoard). Ellen went on to marry three more times If you could just help me tie my family up with Richard I would be eternally grateful, and I will share what I have regarding everyone except Walter Scott Woodcock's children, due to privacy. Yours, Sue

Dear Laurie Yep, it looks a lot like we are kin. This is so cool. I have found some other kin regarding the Small line. Yes, Calvin is my great grandfather's brother. Henry Houghtaling Woodcock married Ellen Bruce They had what I thought was 4 kids - Jennie 03 16 1866 Walter Scott b 04 05 19872 married Lydia Ann Keith b 09 06 1882 m 1900 Levi Houghtaling 08 10 1889 Robert Emerson Henry lived in Loyd Wisconsin, which, in mother's papers is where Walter Scott was born, and also, where she was born: Grace May on 09 14 1903. Have only been able to find mother's birth thing on the Wisconsin site... but it never tells the names of the parents (sigh). So Henry was at least in Loyd in 1872 and 1903. Mother said she was born in the same house that her father was born in. I have seen Loyd as Willow township, and a couple of other names in my searches. Personally, I like Loyd as that is what Mother used. As I have it: Joseph Orr m Sarah Bixby Richard Derek Woodcock m Mary Ann Orr Henry H. Woodcock m Ellen Bruce their children: Jennie, Walter, Robert and Levi Walter m Lydia their children Jennie, Grace, Henry, Art, Harvey, Willard (US BORN), Sam, Vernice, Gay, Rachel, Dan, Jessie (Canadian born). Walter and Lydia went to Alberta about 1915, returned to the US about 1938. Some of the kids came with them, others came on their own. Grace never lived in Canada. Walter and Lydia moved all over the country, home-steading in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming before they finally ran away to Peace River country in Northern Alberta Canada, where they homestead-ed and proved their land. Lydia's mother and brothers went up there a while before Walt and Lydia did, and Lydia's mother encouraged them to come, too. By then there were Jennie, Grace, Henry, Art, Harvey and Willard. They left my mother (Grace) with Walt's sister Jennie, who ended up raising her, in Alcester and Woonsocket SD. I think that Henry H. must have stayed in Wisconsin, though. Sorry, there is no one left to ask. BUT, I know that Ellen did live in Colorado, Denver, for a while. Robert Emerson ended up there at some point, I know that this all is kind of mixed up. But, am adding a note: Ellen Bruce is the daughter of Olive Small, who first married Hoard, then married Bruce, then Mr. Campbell, Mr Fields and finally, Mr Wallace, and she passed away in Alcester SD as Mrs Wallace. Robert and Levi both married, but never had any children. Jennie married Dan Thomas, a storekeeper in Woonsocket (and Alcester I think) and had one son, Gay. He married twice, and had a son and daughter - Daniel and Marilyn. Anyway, hi cousin. Sue

Newspaper Obituary (Alcester, Union, South Dakota):
"MUSTERED OUT"
Calvin M. Woodcock passed peacefully away, Monday, July 31, 1911. He had been in failing health for a number of years, having been during the last three months wholly confined to his bed.
He was born in Steuben County, N. Y., December 17, 1838. His early life was spent in Wisconsin, and here he met and married Miss Almira Williams. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in Co. H. 5th Reg. Wis. Vol. Inf. In the struggle that followed he fought under the different commanders of the Army of the Potomac, taking part in the battles of Williamsburg, Fredericks-Malvern Hill, Antietam, Gettysburg, Seven Days Battle and the battles of the Wilderness. He was taken prisoner during the last year of the war and confined in Andersonville prison pen for seven months. Upon his return home the day before Christmas, due to his emaciated condition, his own family could scarcely recognize him.
The family moved to Audubon county, Iowa, in 1873, and then in 1889 on to Union county, South Dakota. The following year the wife, mother of six girls and two boys, was called home. Since then Mr. Woodcock has been a resident of South Dakota, spending several years at Hot Springs and the closing ones in Alcester.
Three surviving daughters, Mrs. Carrie Weed, Mrs. Lottie Hoard and Mrs. Fannie March, all of Alcester; and two sons, Bert, of Hot Springs, and Ben, of Alcester, together with one sister, Mrs. Martha Hoard, are left to mourn his loss.
This beloved comrade was laid to rest by the hands of the remaining members of the Grand Army of the Republic.
"The march of another soldier is over, his battles are all fought, his victories all won, and as in other days he lies down to rest awhile under the arching sky awaiting the bugle's call."

Second Wisconsin Cavalry
This regiment was organized March 12, 1862, with a total muster of 1127 men, under the command of Col. C C Washburn, who was afterwards promoted to the rank of brigadier general; was engaged in the campaigns in Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. The movements of cavalry regiments are very difficult to follow, owing to the detached duty they are called on to perform. But it can be said of the 2d, that it never faltered when duty called, nor hesitated to follow when lead by its officers. The regiment was mustered out November, 1865, having lost during its campaigns: Killed in action, sixteen; died of wounds, four; died of disease, 265; died of accidents, 8; and a large loss by reason of discharges for disability.
