Message:	My gr gr grgrandfather Moses Shaff (shoff, shaft) and his son James arelisted in the LaPorte Co Census under Moses Shaft and James Shaft. There are many variations in the spelling. In a New Jersey will Moses was named Shoff. He also appeared that way in Erie Co PA around 1820. He resided in Trumbull Co Oh in 1830 and 1840. He left a son Aaron Shoff behind. After LaPorte he went on to Allamakee co IA where he died in the county poor farm sometime in early 1874. His son James Shaff died in Allamakee in the late 1890's. His son John in SD in 1910. He had twin sons Abijah lived in Marion Co IA until he died in the early 1900's and Elijah who died in 1904 in Estelline SD (my gr gr grandfather. He had a daughter Miriam who was married to Homer Allen (brother of Phoesb Elijahs wife0 who lived in Marion Co IA. Do any of these help? I have more info.

Message:	My husband is descedant from Miriam Long Shaff wife of Homer Allen. Do you know where the "Long" came from? What dates do you have for birth and death of Moses? Who was his wife? Was he married more than 1 time? Thanks for any additional information about the family.

Message:	Beverly, I have not figured out where the Long came from. Moses was born in 1790 (most likely in Pike County PA). He was married JAn 22, 1814 to Sarah (Sally) Saxon) in Sussex Co NJ. As far as I can determine they had the following chindren. Aaron- Jan 13, 1816 - Jan 19 1882 (Trumbell Co Ohio). James-Aug 11, 1817-Dec 21, 1897 (Allamakee Co Iowa). John - Jan 13, 1822- Feb 6, 1910 (Hot Springs, SD) Abijah -Sept 15, 1830-Jul 4, 1906 (Marion Co IA) Elijah (his twin and my gr gr grandfather ) - Sept 15, 1830- Mar 23, 1904 (Estelline, Hamlin Co SD) he married Homer Allen's sister Phoebe). Miriam (shaff) Allen- June 15, 1834 -1927 (I have this date somewhere but do not know where she died and would dearly love to know that and if there is an obituary for her somewhere) I do know that she is buried in swan cemetery in Marion Co IA ( I have a picture of the tombstone) Mary Ann who married Seth Burnett Jan 25, 1837 at the age of 14 in Hubbard Twp Trumbull Co Ohio. Elizabeth who married William Smith Oct 5, 1843 in Brookfield Twp, Trumbull Co Oh I am currently searching for info on the last 2 girls and trying to determine whether there is 1 more daughter. Moses died at the county poorfarm in Waukon, Iowa sometime in the week before March 5, 1974. Sally was still alive then I have a copy of an article which I copied from a newpaper microfilm regarding this. I have a lot of info on the family. I also have a lot of info on Homer as he is my gr gr grandmothers brother. Both families lived in Trumbull Co Ohio until sometime befor 1840-1850. Homer and Mariam were married March 5, 1857 in Waukon IA. How much more info would you like. Marie Wood

Message:	Marie, Thank you for your quick reply to my query. Do you know the parents of Moses Shaff and Sally Saxon? i have the father of Homer B. allen as Lewis P. allen born in NY. Is that correct? I'm interested in what other information you have about the Allen family. It seems that they spent all their life in Iowa although I do not have a 1860 census for them. Where were Moses and Sally in 1860? Our family line goes down from Homer and Miriams daughter Bessie Ellen ( I have a picture of her). She married Wheelock Hubbell Oct. 12, 1870 in Windom, Minn. I wonder how they got together? Beverly

Subject:	Re: schoff
Message:Dear Beverly, I am not certain yet who the parents of Moses were. They may have been Frederick Shaff who was in the revolutionary war, lived in Pike Co PA, and is buried in Berkshire NY. He lived to be 107 years old. He married Mary Purine(Perrine) ( and other spellings) in NJ (I have the date somewhere). Moses was a witness on a will written by a Perrine ( I would have to find it and look). Moses was in Erie PA in 1820. Sometime between 1816 and 1820 he was in Canada and had a child or 2 there. In 1830 and 1840 he was in Trumbull Co OH. First in Brookfield and then in Hubbard. As far as I can determine 3 of his children were married there and at least 2 remained there (Aaron Shoff and Mary Ann Burnett). In 1850 he was in Springfield Twp, LaParte Co, IN as Moses Shaft. He did own property there. He first showed up Ludlow Twp, Allamakee Co, IA in around 1853. He is in the County History book then and in the state census in 1854 as Moses Shaft and them 1856 as Moses Shaff (you always have to look at the various spellings. His son Aaron was always Aaron Shoff in Trumbull Co. He remained there and is buried there. Lewis P was the father of Homer and also Phoebe Shaff (wife of Elijah my gr gr grandfather. The 1854 IA State Census lists his birthplace as NJ but I dont think that is true. I think he may have been born in NY. His parents Oliver and Flavilla were married in Saratoga Spring NY and then went to Newton Falls, Trumbull Co OH where they are burien. Lewis also owned land in Trumbull Co which was deeded to him by his father and also and Uncle Isaac. Sometime he left and appeated in McHenry Co IL in the 1850 Census with his wife Eleanor and 5 children Henry, Homer, Phebe, Oliver and George. They were also in the1856 IA State Census with Homer, Pheba and Oliver. Eleanor disappeared in the 1860 Census. He was listed there with and Eliza and George. He was 50 and Eliza was 35. I am not sure wheter she was a second wife or some other relation. In 1870 he was in the Winniesheik Co, IA (very close twp in the next county) with EH (age ?_ and Wm A(age 3). Again I dont know the relationship. In the 1885 IA state census LP Allen is listen in the Decorah, Winnisheik Co County Poor Home. I assume he died ther but I cannot find any records after that. He was 80 years old at that time. HOmer and Miriam were married in Allamakee County in 1857. I have the exact date somewhere. I found it in an old copy of a Iowas historical magazine from early records of Allamakee COunty. They must have been somewhere nearby but heaven only knows where. I just did an Ancestry .com search there are 17 Homer Allens in the 1860 US Census record but only one comes cloe to his age and it is definitely not him. I have a copy of his 1870 census record in Frankville, Winniesheik Co IA. The first duaghter listed in what I made out to be Seala J. Is that really correct? He must have missed the census takers in 1860. I cannot find my mother in the Alabama cencus in 1920 or 1930 and I know exactly where she was both times. You said that Bessie was married in 1870 in Windom Minn. THat is interesting. The 1870 IA Census lists her as 9 years old. Do you have a copy of that census? As far as how they go together is they were the same Bessies I dont know but the Shaffs and Allens were in Mitchell Co, Sioux Co, Winniesheik Co, Allamakee Co,. There was even one of Aaron sons (Daniel who served in the CIvil was out of Allamakee Co in the same unit as Elijah. They traveled a lot either by train or horse. I have a photo of some of Moses's children shen they were older. One is definitely Elijah, w may be Abijah because they certainly look as if they were twins, and there is another male and a female. I cant figure out who those 2 are and the lady who sent them to me wasnt sure either. Her grandmoter was Anne (Shaff( Barker) in Osage IA.. Do you have Homers Obit. I believe I do somewhere. I will find it if you need it. Marie
