History of Central Kansas  V  II  Lewis Publ.  1902Gordon M. Gafford, M.D........He was born in Baltimore, Maryland Aug. 26, 1864 and belongs to an old and honored family which was founded in America many generations ago.  His paternal Grandparents, Joseph Gafford, and his wife, both died in Baltimore at a great age and were buried there.  (I have been there 3 times, have not yet found grave stones)  In their family were five children, two sons (my Joseph & your James) and three daughters, all of whom married and reared families of their own.  The oldest, Sarah Ann, is now ninety seven years of age and is still a resident of Baltimore, MD.  One son James A, is a wealthy retired citizen of Pasadena, CA, of this family Joseph C. Gafford, the father of our subject, is the third in order of birth.  He was born in Baltimore, MD in about 1826, and is now a resident of Hamlin, KS.  By occupation he is a farmer.  He was married in Iowa about 1856, to Miss Dorcas Sherwood, of Oskaloosa, that state.  Her mother died in Burlington, KS in 1872 or 73, but her father, Albert Sherwood is still living in that city, a farmer by occupation.  They were the parents of five children, one son and four daughters.  The son ,m Joseph C. Gafford and family removed from Iowa to Burlington, KS in Brown & Dauphin counties for many years.  In the later county, the mother of our subject dies in Dec. 1889, at the age of seventy three years.GORDON M. GAFFORD  ...9th in order of birth in a family of 11 children.  William (the rancher/farmer) he had7 children., (5 of them, girls who are all old maids).Cordelia widow of Dr. John Edwards, Dr. James A, physician, real-estate dealer and man of great wealth, living in Colorado Springs, CO.  Mrs. Anna Wise has seven children, Alvin Cattle ranch, Dr. Charles C. (no children), Mrs. Mollie Wise, has five children, (2 sons who were 1 pharmacist, 2 Veterinarian), John L was killed by a live wire in his office at Buena Vista CO, at the age of thirty nine, highly educated man and successful physician, who had studied in European hospitals and was surgeon for the Denver & Rio Grande and Colorado Midland Railroad Companies and the Colorado reformatory, Daniel M, a physician of Leonardville, KS who is married and has one son,  Mrs. Laura Mills...Wuautumka, OK territory and has one son (Paul)...........Gordon  College of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk, Iowa, Rush Medical College, Chicago grad 1894, grad also from Barnes Medical College at St. Louis, MO, intern at Cook Co. Hosp. Chicago, demonstrator of anatomy in Chicago summer school of medicine for 3 years.  In 1896, he opened an office in Bern, Nemaha Co. KS. Engaged in private practice, then to Emporia in June 1901.  He has an x-ray machine, and continues to take post graduate courses yearly, receiving several diplomas.  Married Swpt 19, 1889 to Miss Minnie Schmitz of Hastings, NE, da of J.H. Schmitz....4 children Myrtle D., Annie, Gordon M. & Marie.  He was a Master Mason (they all were) and IO of the Odd Fellows, a stanch Democrat. (how did that happen????????)
FORMER EMPORIA DOCTOR DIES
Dr. Gordon M. Gafford, 73 years old, who operated the medical establishment of Gafford and Gafford, with a brother in Emporia, several years ago, died Monday, at his home in Manitou Springs, Col. Mr. Gafford left Emporia about 1915. While practicing medicine in Emporia, the Gafford and Gafford office was over the Morris Drugstore. Dr. Gordon Gafford died of a heart attack.For several years Dr. Gafford, operated hospitals in Hugo and Cheyenna Wells, Colo. In 1931 he moved to Manitou Springs, and shortly afterwards went to California. He returned to make his home in Manitou Springs in 1932. For many years he was a railroad physician in eastern Kansas.Surviving ae a daughter Mrs. A.T. Schelmann of Grand Island, Neb. And three brothers.

Gafford, 83, who formerly operated hospitals at Hugo, and Cheyenne Wells and Sharon Springs, Kan., was found at his home, 122 North Fifteenth street, shortly after noon yesterday. He had lived here since 1932. Dr. Gafford was the victim of a heart attack and was discovered in his room by his nurse and housekeeper, Carrie Schope, on her return from a short trip to town to obtain provisions. Dr. Gafford had what he believed to be a slight attack of indigestion the night before but physicians pronounced it the beginning of the cardiac condition which caused his death.Dr. Gafford operated hospitals in Cheyenne Wells and Sharon Springs for a number of years before moving to Hugo in January 1923 (??1928??). In 1931, he moved to Manitou Springs, but shortly afterward went to California. He returned to make his home in Colorado Springs in 1933. Dr. Gafford lived in eastern Kansas many years, where he was a railroad physician. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. A.T. Schallmann, Grand Island, Nebr., and three brothers.

Colorado Springs GazetteThursday, October 1, 1936 page 2Last Rites Today for Dr. GaffordFuneral services for Dr. Gordon Moss Gafford, 73-year old, retired eastern Colorado hospital head, who died Monday afternoon at his home, 123 North Fifteenth street, will be held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon from the Swan drawing room. Rev. W.G. Schaefer will officiate. The body will be cremated in Denver. Dr. Gafford is survived by a son, a daughter, two brothers and a sister. He died Monday from an attack of acute indigestion. A news story to the effect that he died during this temporary absence of his nurse was incorrect. His nurse returned from a trip to town and found him in a serious condition from which he died several hours after.

Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Lantz, who died Sunday at the home of her sister, Mrs. Myrtle Schelmann in Concordia, were held Wednesday afternoon at the St Andrew's Episcopal Church. Rev. Carl Nau conducted the services, and the music was by the church choir. Interment was made in Maplewood Cemetery. The pall-bearers were Roy Reed, Charles Martin, Alfred Harris, Luther Buck, Morton Guettel, and Calvin Lambert.

MRS. ANN LENTS DEAD
Mrs. Anna Lents died Sunday morning in Concord at the home of her sister, Mrs. Myrtle Schulman, of leakage of the heart. Mrs. Lance's maiden name was Anna Gaffed. She was born in Nebraska, and fourteen years ago moved to Emporia with her parents. She attended the Emporia High School, and several years ago the Gaffed Family moved to Kindly. She was married to Roy Lantz about 5 years ago, and their home was in Salina. Mrs. Lantz is survived by Mr. Lantz, two daughters; her father, G.M. Gafford, and one brother, Gordon Gafford, who is with the 5th Division in France.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 3:30 pm in the Episcopal Church. Rev. Carl W. Nau had charge of the services, and interment was made in Maplewood Cemetery.

LeRoy E. Lantz, 53, native of Dover, Ohio where he resided for many years, died unexpectedly at his home in 1175 Tuscarawas Ave. NW., this city, at 7:15 pm, yesterday following a short illness with a heart ailment.
Mr. Lantz was a son of the late Levi Lantz and Margaret Scheuerman Lantz. He was employed as bookkeeper at the Gibson Bros. Auto Wrecking Co. here and formerly was a field representative for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in the mid-west.
He graduated from Dover high school and was a charter member of the Alpha Phi fraternity in that city. His wife, Anna Gafford Lantz, died in 1919.
Surviving are three children, Mrs. Richard Hurst, (Maurine) of this city, Mrs. Roy Culp, (Gretchen) of Dallas Texas, and James Lantz of Salina, Kansas; his mother, Mrs. Margaret Lantz of this city; and one grandson; a sister, Mrs. Evan Jones, (Pearl) of this city; two half-sisters, Miss Anna Wiederecht of Massillion, Ohio, Mrs. Wood Smith, of Los Angeles, California, and a half brother, Charles Wiedereicht, of this city.
Funeral services will be held at the Toland Funeral Home, Dover, Ohio at 2pm Wednesday with Rev. R. I. Giering officiating. Burial will be made in Maple Grove Cemetery.
