Early History of Hoard and other Pioneer Families as related by Lyon J. Hoard:
By 1855 the Hoard and Small families began to move westward....Horace and Anna (Ellison) Hoard, Peter and Jenettea (Hoard) Power and Moses J. and Olive Cleo (Hoard) Small did not go west with other family members but stayed in New York.

Their son Lorenzo, enlisted at Louisville, age 21, to serve in the Civil War, with Co. C, 142nd NY Volunteer Infantry, 6 Sep 1862. Died in the hospital at Portsmouth Grove, R.I. Oct 14, 1864. Horace Hoard must have died soon after. Anna moved with three remaining sons, Ira J., Freeman, and Henry to Lawrence twp. Van Buren Co., Michigan. Also in this twp. was Harvey Hoard, b. Vermont, Oct. 1, 1805, died Oct 15, 1869 - perhaps a cousin, but remains unidentified.

Alonzo's two brothers, Cephas and Granville, settled nearby in Bear Creek twp, Sauk Co., Wisconsin.
No land records for Cephas who was a carpenter. Granville bought and sold land from 1855 to 1856/66? Tradition states he went to the gold rush, blinded near Pike's Peak, Colorado, returned to family in Wisconsin, and supposedly they moved to new land in Minnesota.

Early History of Hoard and other Pioneer Families as related by Lyon J. Hoard:
"Alonzo (58) and Keziah (52)(Small) Hoard, came to Dakota territory in April of 1874 following their older sons..pioneering for the third time in their lives."
Home at time of marriage: "...Alonzo's farm in mile square no. 28, facing the Grasssy river and bisected by a creek on Lost Nation Road, about 2 3/4 miles SW of the town of Louisville."
Their last land transaction is dated May 28, 1855, deeding land to Edmond Whitney. The last child born in NY was John Gilbert. Tradition says they moved in 1855 to Wisconsin. They "settled on or near the Wisconsin river, post office address Lone Rock, in Ithica twp., Richland county. Alonzo grew sorghum for beer industry. Keziah made men's suits. ...
Alonzo's two brothers, Cephas and Granville, settled nearby in Bear Creek twp, Sauk Co., Wisconsin.
No land records for Cephas who was a carpenter. Granville bought and sold land from 1855 to 1856/66? Tradition states he went to the gold rush, blinded near Pike's Peak, Colorado, returned to family in Wisconsin, and supposedly they moved to new land in Minnesota...
Alonzo and Keziah followed foster son, Harvey Putnam Hoard to Iowa and South Dakota after the civil war.... Orison and Addison visited Harvey in Iowa and then took claims in Alcester, SD area. They were the first settlers in this area. Then they staked claims for their parents.
Alonzo and Keziah and family arrived in Union county May 17, 1874....
other families to settle here include: Addison P. Hoard, Edson O. Hoard, Mrs. A.D.Weed, Reuben B. Harding and wife,...During the 70's the community suffered three grasshopper plagues.

Notes:
Alonzo's two brothers, Cephas and Granville, settled nearby in Bear Creek twp, Sauk Co., Wisconsin.
No land records for Cephas who was a carpenter. Granville bought and sold land from 1855 to 1856/66? Tradition states he went to the gold rush, blinded near Pike's Peak, Colorado, returned to family in Wisconsin, and supposedly they moved to new land in Minnesota.
