Marcia says: b. 1850, Died Feb 22, 1916, 66 years old.
They lived South of Okaton (Okataw?)on a claim near Iroquois, 3 oldest born on Homestead.
They lived in White River, to bury Frank who died of colon cancer, there was a January flood and thaw so they couldn't go to Murdo. Sherman took apart a shed and made a coffin, then he took him to the cemetery in White River and placed a wooden cross there.
Iroquois was 10 to 15 miles west of DeSmet where they would go to picnic. (Old Settler's Picnic)
family of Sherman and Virllie.

Marcia reports that Sherm said that he took Virllie to the homestead because she was pretty and didn't want to leave her in town. She was pregnant and couldn't stay in the heat of the cabin. Also, Frank killed a cat in the door jam and Virllie wouldn't stay. He had to heat the cabin so hot that the dishes in the cupboard were too hot to touch because Frank was so sick from the cancer.

When Virllie left a blizzard hit and she was saved by the little dog sitting on her feet and Sherm walked alongside the horse which saved him from freezing.

French explorers are known to have made their way to what is now South Dakota as early as 1743. The Spanish held dominion over the land for the first part of the eighteenth century, but South Dakota was sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. By the late 1800s there were enough people in the territory to create two states. Thus, the U.S. Congress approved the division of the territory creating the states of North Dakota and South Dakota in 1889.

Nose broken in football, ears stuck out because his father lifted him up by them.
Marcia knew all of Dad's stories because she rode with him on the rural mail route on Saturdays.
She claimed she had bronchial pneumonia every year because of Sherm's cigarette smoke.

Marcia remembers being 12 or 13 when her dad got the phone calls and his body slumped because his brothers had died, Neill and Temple died close together.
