Hi Laurie, I've got to get home and look at my info (I'm at work now). I have a pic of a older woman and on the back it says "Grandma Porter" and I never knew where she belonged for sure except it was with other Crawford/Mason "stuff". My line is on world connect along with yours. Take a look and we can discuss if you like. My William Bogle and older bro James left Washington county and went to Van Buren Co. Where I have been looking for the rest of the family all these years. Once I found the clan in Wash. Co. Census, the rest got easier. I still have nothing on Lavina Mason's parents, but found a sister I think. James m. Candace Whitten and was a doctor in Douds. You list a S. Crawford as Williams B.'s she is Estella Mae (Stella) my grandmother. Kate is Katherine Rose, Mollie is Mary R. I'm so glad you put your information up on that site as I have been going in wrong directions for so long. My uncle paid a genealogist to research and I have been going on his wrong parents for years. He said William B.'s father was Samuel b. In VA. In the census I found that his father was David Sr. Or so I thought until you confirmed. Thank you, Karen

My 2gguncle, William Porter, is John Walker Crawford's father in law. Walker Crawford married Mary Porter. I'd love more information if you don't think it's too distant. What I have is from some copies of family group sheets , etc that were given to my mother years ago. These were compiled by Alma Matney Francis, Etta Baird Baumeister, and Helen Crandall Baird, sometime before 1985. Esther Porter, who married Oliver Carson Crawford, was a cousin to Mary Porter Crawford. Many of the Porter family as well as the Crawford family lived in Ainsworth, Iowa. One of the things included was a very poor photocopy of a family photo of John Walker Crawford's family in 1906 for their 50th wedding anniversary. I can try to scan it if you would like. He was born in Perry County, Ohio, Sept. 13, 1832, and is the son of David and Rebecca (Bogle) Crawford, the former a native of New York, and of English descent, the latter a native of Pennsylvania, and of Irish descent. They came to this county in 1844, and settled in Oregon Township on the farm now occupied by our subject, where they remained till their death; the father dying in 1872, aged eightyone years, and the mother in 1875, aged seventy-three. They reared a family of eleven children, nine of whom are living.

For almost half a century Mr. Crawford has been a resident of Washington County, and is therefore entitled to a place among those who are truly pioneers, men who, like John the Baptist, came to prepare the way, to make the rough places smooth, that those who come after them may be able to enjoy the advantages that were denied the earliest settlers of the country. On coming to this county, Burlington was the nearest market point, but when the produce was hauled there it was generally found to be in small demand, and little money was received for it. It was either trade or no sale. During the early days it was difficult to obtain money enough to pay taxes (which had to be paid in gold), and postage on the few letters that were sent through the mail. But what a change has taken place in this country during the time of Mr. Crawford's residence. To-day there is not a county seat in the entire State of Iowa but what is penetrated by railroads, while the telegraph and telephone wires cross and recross each other in every direction. Truly, this is a beautiful land, and the subject of this sketch realizes that in this world, at least, it is hard to find better.
