Bio from: Historical Gazetteer and Biographical Memorial of Cattaraugus Co. NY, pub 1893History of the Town of South Valley  Chapter XLVII (47)Page 1112John F. FENTON, son of George W. and Elsie (OWEN) FENTON, was born in Carroll, Chautauqua county, Oct. 30, 1816. He was a brother of Hon. Reuben E. FENTON, of Jamestown, governor and statesman, and was the most conspicuous resident South Valley ever had. Receiving a common school education he embarked quite extensively in lumbering before attaining his majority, investing his profits in timber lands in the county and ultimately acquiring a vast tract near the Allegheny, for which be was once offered $250,000. He engaged largely in manufacturing and rafting in which he continued until his death Sept. 10, 1869. His wife died Jan. 22, 1874. A Republican in politics he was supervisor of South Valley from 1860 to 1864 inclusive and held also the offices of assessor and highway commissioner.

Descendant of John Owen. Daughter of Erie Woodward Fenton and Addie Champlin Crowley, his wife. Granddaughter of John Freeman Fenton and Sally Maria Woodward, his wife. Gr-granddaughter of George Washington Fenton and Elsie Owen, his wife. Gr-gr-granddaughter of John Owen and Lydia Gibson, his wife. John Owen (1741-1843) enlisted from Salisbury, Conn., 1775, under Capt. Nathaniel Buel, and responded to alarms on short tours. In 1792 he removed to Carroll, N. Y., where he received a pension and where he died. Also Nos. 40535, 47287.
