E Pension app #49814The following is from an article by Dr. Ruth Guy for Kaufman County Historical Book vol. 2. This was supplied by Curtis Rushing."William Jefferson Guy was born June 10, 1842 in Marion County, Mississippi. He was the eighth child of William and Martha Guy. He served in the Quitman Guard Company E, 16th Mississippi Regiment of Volunteers under the command of General Stonewall Jackson and was payrolled from the Army in Clinton, Louisiana, in 1865. He returned to Pike County, Miss. But returned to Bienville [Parish], Louisiana. There he met and married Caroline Elizabeth Jordan, the daughter of Wyatt Jordan, in 1866.To this union were born eleven children: Sarah Martha, born April 5, 1868 (married Will Wright); Louis Napoleon, born September 1, 1869 (married Cleo Stockton); Julia Hazletine, born March 15, 1873 (married Neil I. Jones); Willie Armenia, born September 19, 1875, (died at age 5); Oliver Perry, born December 1, 1877 (never married); Henry Luther, born January 23, 1880 (married Minnie Elizabeth Murphey); Cora Lee, born March 28, 1882 (married Will Johnson); Laura Pearl, born August 17, 1884 (married D. B. "Bert" Wright); Winnie Iva, born October 26, 1886 (married Milton D. Jones); Ethel Coy, born October 21, 1889 (married Joe Splawn); Virgie Eleanor, born March 13, 1892 (died at age 2).After the death of his first wife, in 1904, he was married to Agnes L. Spinks, January 10, 1907. 1907. After her death, he married Mary A. Greathouse, October 15, 1912.The Guy family moved to Texas in 1869 and settled on Clear Creek near Malakoff. The family later moved to Bosque County, Hood County, Polk County, Summerville County, and finally settled east of Kemp on 1891. William Jefferson Guy and his third wife moved to Mabank in 1920 where he lived until his death on April 24, 1924.William Jefferson Guy was a farmer who had a large orchard and his front yard was ablaze with flowers planted English style. Not a blade of grass dared invade. Guineas and peacocks announced all visitors as they approached the house by way of a long driveway. He rode horseback regularly until he was over 80. At age 82, he complained of back pain after carrying a 200 pound railroad iron more than 100 yards.W. J. Guy and his first two wives are buried in Spikes Cemetery near the community of Prairieville.Henry Luther Guy (born January 23, 1880 and died July 1, 1952) met and married a young schoolteacher, Minnie Elizabeth Murphey (born January 22, 1879 and died August 3, 1964). She was the daughter of Granville Marion Murphey and Mary Angeline Pritchett Murphey who had moved from Illinois to settle near the Tolosa community in Kaufman County. Henry Luther Guy was a farmer all his life. He was very active in the First Baptists Church of Kemp where he was a deacon for many years. He was a soft-spoken man whose sage advice was sought by many young people. Many Kemp boys gained work experience on his farm. Minnie Elizabeth Murphey taught school at Cedar Station and at Whitehall. After her marriage, she taught at Arcadia. She had a lifelong interest in her church and in the public school. She taught a Sunday school class for more than 40 years and also served on the Board of the Kemp Independent School District for a number of terms.The children of Henry Luther Guy and Minnie E. Guy are: Emmett Russell born March 29, 1906 (married Naomi Jean Powell, daughter of Needham Earnest Powell and Rhena (Human) Powell of Kaufman) and Leona Ruth Guy, born March 17, 1913 (Professor Emeritus of Pathology, University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas).
