Samuel STEVENS was born in Cayuga County, New York, on Aug 11, 1812. When he was of age he moved to Ohio and from there to Illinois in 1865. There he remained until increasing years made it desirable that he cease from active work. In 1878 he moved to Iowa, to be with his son Ralph Edward STEVENS with whom he made his home until his death, Apr. 24, 1900, aged 89 Years.

Feb. 15, 1844, in Ohio (Lenox, Ashtabula County) he married Miss Jane E[lizabeth]. LAFFERTY. There was born to this union 4 children. George W., Ralph E., Electa M. and Orra J. Of them only Ralph survived his father, the others having died in childhood. His wife, Jane, died about 8 years ago. The loneliness of these last years was cheered by children and grandchildren until old age caused his death.

While not a member of the church, he was recognized as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. He was ready to go when called. He had won the esteem of many friends as an upright man, a good neighbor and friend.

The funeral services were held at the home of his son, conducted by his Pastor Rev. Ambrose S. WRIGHT, followed by interment in the Bethel Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.

Jane Elizabeth (LAFFERTY) STEVENS, Samuel's wife, was born March 31, 1823, Ashtabula County, Ohio, the daughter of Samuel and Margaret LAFFERTY. She died in Ringgold County, Iowa, December 15th, 1891, with interment at Bethel Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.
