Alfred GREENE
Buried in Mt. Hope Presbyterian Cemetery, near Dorchester, Iowa. Born inWashington N.Y. Moved to Pennsylvania in 1835. In 1853 came to WaterlooTownship, thence to Juston County, Minnesota where he remained until 1869when he returned to Waterloo Township.
Levi was a minister, a graduate of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He served in theCivil War in Company H, 9th Iowa Infantry, Union Army. He enlisted Aug.24th, 1861 at Decorah, Iowa. Mustered out December 31, 1864 at Woodville,Alabama honorably discharged by virtue of re-enlistment as Vet. Vol.under the provision of G.O. Nol 191, series of 1863 War Dept. Was aprivate from enlistment to June 1, 1865, whe he was promoted toCorporal. Mustered out at Lousiville, Ky. July 18, 1865. Complexionlight, eyes blue; hari brown. He was a farmer, 5'6" high. He was engagedin action at Arkansas Post Jan 11, 1864. He served as a cook and as acook in the hospital from his army record, National Archives. A second source says his death was in Delhi, Iowa.
He was know as Joe and was a doctor. Joe served in the Civil War. He wascaptured by Confederate Troops and held a prisoner in the southernprison. The conditions were very bad there. He along with several otherprisoners escaped from this stockade. Only Joe and his pal were notre-captured. They got back safely to the Union line with the aid of"darkies." Some say Joe attended Ann Arbor, Michigan after the war,graduated in medicine and died the day of graduation due to an illness.
He married Hannah Winder 26 May 1842 at Crawford, Pennsylvania . Hannah Winder was born at Bloomfield, Franklin, Ohio 5 Oct 1815 daughter of James Winder and Ann Kirk .
