John WINSLOW
REFERENCE: WILLIS, Charles R., 3 Jan 1997; WINSLOW genealogy, Allen Ogden's pedigree chart for Samuel WINSLOW. Note that John WINSLOW "came on the "Fortune" 1621" - assume this is saying John WINSLOW came from England on the ship "Fortune" to the United States in 1621. Probably died in Boston. WEISER, Gloria, 3 Jan 1997; WINSLOW ANCESTRY records, 2nd child of Edward WINSLOW and Magdalene OLLYVER, lived in Plymouth and moved to Boston in 1657. HEATON, Vernon, 1980, The Mayflower; page 193, one of the Assistant Governors, 1657-1672, of the Plymouth Plantation; married Mary CHILTON, daughter of James CHILTON, who with his wife came to Plymouth on the "Mayflower" in 1620. The fifty-five ton ship "Fortune" on 11 Nov 1621 sailed into Plymouth Harbour (page 147), the first ship from overseas since the "Mayflower" departed. SHERMAN, Robert M., Editor, 1978, Mayflower Families Through Five Generations; Voume Two, pages 6-10, son of Edward and Magdalena (OLLYVER) WINSLOW, and brother of Pilgrim Edward WINSLOW. John WINSLOW was listed a freeman in 1633, and became active in the government of the colony, setting off and appraising land and serving jury; in 1653 he became a member of "a counsell of warr." His will attested 21 May 1674, is preserved in Boston, and copied in this reference. HOLTON, David Parsons, 1877, Winslows and their Descendants in America, with the English Ancestry; Kenelm Winslow, Volume I; pages 12, 20 "...common ancestor was Edward Winslow of Droitwich, England, and whose sons, Governor Edward Winslow and his brothers John, Kenelm, Josiah, and Gilbert, came to Plymouth."; page 21, Parish Registar of St. Peter's, Droitwich records John Wynsloe was baptized 18 Apr 1597, born 16 Apr 1597, sonne of Edward Wynsloe; page 79, died 1674, married 12 Oct 1624, Mary Chilton, daughter of James.
REFERENCE: WILLIS, Charles R., 3 Jan 1997; WINSLOW genealogy, Allen Ogden's pedigree chart of Samuel WINSLOW (Abt 1725-Aft 1790). WEISER, Gloria, 3 Jan 1997; WINSLOW ANCESTRY records, came to Cape Cod Harbor, Massachusetts on the Mayflower 1620. HEATON, Vernon, 1980, The Mayflower; page 87, Mary CHILTON came to Cape Cod (Plymouth) on the "Mayflower" with her parents, John CHILTON, who died on the "Mayflower" as it lay in Cape Cod harbour on 8 Dec 1620, and wife (name not preserved) who died shortly afterwards at Plymouth during the 1621 Spring epidemic. She married John WINSLOW, brother of Governor Edward WINSLOW, had nine children before 1650, and died in Boston, New England, in 1679. SHERMAN, Robert M., Editor, 1978, Mayflower Families Through Five Gererations; Volume Two, pages 5-6, she and her husband John WINSLOW are buried in King's Chapel Burying Ground, Boston, 10th child of James CHILTON and Susanna (FURNER) CHILTON. A tradition, apparently true, persists that Mary CHILTON was the first female to reach shore from the Mayflower; less certain is whether this was accomplished at Cape Cod or at Plymouth. Pages 8-10, is Mary (CHILTON) WINSLOW's will, the only will of a female passenger of the Mayflower, a paper today preserved at the Suffolk County Registry of Probate in Boston, proved 11 July 1679.
