                   OBITUARY:
SANTOS ALFRED "AL" GOMES Born in Monterey, California on November 18, 1906, was taken away peacefully, to become "Our Angel", at his home in Mission Hills on January 8, 2004. His parents, John and Mary Santos moved from Monterey, where they fished for sardines, abalone, salmon and bottom fish, to San Diego in 1928 and settled in Point Loma. The family was among the pioneering fishermen of San Diego ' s tuna industry. For a while, Al was the Skipper of the family ' s boat, the Sacramento, and later became Captain and Co-Owner of his bait boat, the Julia B. He met his bride to be, Jennie "Navarra" Santos at Van Camp cannery in 1938 and was married 64 years ago on September 17, 1939. Upon his semi-retirement in the early 1960s, Al fished on the United States for Pete Giacalone, went crab fishing in Alaska on the converted naval ship, the Westgate, and worked for Scripps Oceanography on their boat. He also worked for Convair at General Dynamics. Al was an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, the Italian-Catholic Federation, Branch 246, the Fish Mongers, San Diego Elks Lodge, and the International Order of Foresters. Al is survived by his wife, Jennie Santos; daughters Mary (Phil) Mickelson, Adeline (Roy) Woodward, and Freda (Tony) Iraci; seven grandchildren, Tina, Phil (Amy) and Tim Mickelson, Jennie (Greg) Spounias, Alfred Smith, Lisa and Anthony (Noemi) Iraci; five great-grandchildren, Brandon and Mason Spounias, Amanda, Sophia and Evan Mickelson; and brothers Tom (Donna) Santos, Ted and Bill Santos. Rosary to be said on Sunday, January 11, at 7 p.m. with a Mass celebrating his life on Monday, January 12, at 10 a.m. Both services will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Church (Mission Hills), located at 4077 Ibis Street. Arrangements by Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Vincent de Paul church in honor of St. Joseph.
