Mary Lou Miller
Posted: Tuesday, March 23, 2004
Mary Lou Miller, 95, of Amarillo died Sunday, March 21, 2004.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today in Llano Cemetery with Jeff Conway, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Mrs. Miller was born Sept. 16, 1908, in Miles. She grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Pascall High School in 1926. She attended Gulf Park College in Biloxi, Miss., and later transferred to University of Texas, becoming a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.
Mary Lou married Jack W. Miller, also of Fort Worth, on Valentine's Day 1930. They later moved to Castro County, where he pioneered dry land wheat farming on family land west of Dimmitt. Irrigation came in the late 1940s, growing cotton and milo, along with running cattle on winter wheat.
Jack and Mary Lou moved to Amarillo in 1947, building a home at 37 Oldham Circle. Mary Lou was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and later Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was an avid card player, gardener and past member of Amarillo Country Club, Amarillo Club, Amarillo Art Center and Vagabond Dance Club. Mary Lou loved to entertain and definitely had a flair for French recipes.
Travel had also been a lifetime interest. She was aboard the maiden flight of the Concord from Paris to New York, crossing the Atlantic in four hours. Jack died in 1994 after having shared almost 64 years together.
Survivors include a son, Tom Miller and wife, Audrey, of Amarillo; and a grandson, Thomas Miller of Dallas.
The family suggests memorials be to Medical Center League House in care of Junior League of Amarillo, 1700 S. Polk St., Amarillo, TX 79102.
