The Helm(s) Family of West Virginia by Way of Virginia
History of Preston County, by Oren Morton
The History of Preston County states that George and his wife settled in Preston County around 1830. He came to Preston County with his brother, John Marshall Helm, who were both saddlers by trade. After Mary Stalnaker died in 1856, the children were "farmed out to various families in Preston County, and not one of his twelve children were living with George and his second wife, Catherine, in the 1860 census." (The Helm(s) Family of West Virginia)
After the death of his mother in 1856, he lived with the William B. Zinn family in Preston County, Virginia (now WV). George served in the Civil War, Company C, 6th West Virginia Cavalry. His term expired 15 Aug 1864. It should be noted that most of the Helm family was fighting for the Confederacy since they were originally from the southern states. (The Helm(s) Family of West Virginia, p. 136) In January 1888, George and Lucinda had 4 children that died from typhoid fever (diphtheria) in a matter of about 8 days.
