Captain William Helm served in the Revolutionary War as an officer in the Virginia Continental Line. William sold his holding in Jefferson County, Virginia in 1787 and relocated his family to shelbyville, Kentucky near Louisville. William drowned in the Ohio River in 1806 while making a trip between Virginia and Kentucky.
The History of Preston County states that George and his wife settled in Preston County around 1830. He came to Preston County with his brother, John Marshall Helm, who were both saddlers by trade. After Mary Stalnaker died in 1856, the children were "farmed out to various families in Preston County, and not one of his twelve children were living with George and his second wife, Catherine, in the 1860 census."
