BIRTH: There are differences in family records as where Nathan was born - Warren, Lincoln, Maine or Barrettstown (now Hope), Waldo, Maine. It should be noted that Waldo County wasn't formed until 1827 out of Hancock County, which was formed in 1789, the year after Nathan's birth. Hancock County was formed from Lincoln County, which was formed in 1760. So, technically, Nathan was born in Lincoln County. The question remains, as of Sept 1997, to determine if he was born in Barrettstown (now Hope) or Warren. However, "Annals of Warren" by Cyrus Eaton, p. 230 indicate that in 1785 Reuben Tolman came to Warren and in 1802 removed to Hope/ Barrettstown; Family History Library US/Can Bk 974.153 H2E. DEATH: Obituary on file in Mound City Library, Linn Co., Kansas. The contents following from the "Pleasanton Observer." "GRANDMA BRICE PASSED AWAY; Died as She Had Lived, Quietly, Peacefully, Sweetly. Grandma Brice passed away at the Bartleson home Friday evening, 10 Dec 1910. She was almost 93 years old, and the sand of life had simply run out and the spirit took its flight to the God who gave it, leaving the little form asleep on the pillow in the most natural and peaceful position. She died as she had lived--quietly, sweetly and without a murmur. Miss Esther Tolman was born in Augusta, Maine, March 17, 1818. In 1836 she moved with the family to Des Moines, Iowa, where, four years later, she was married to Dr. S. M. Brice. The two families were pioneers, and Dr. Brice was for many years an interpreter for the Indians. Mrs. Brice's grandfather on her mother's side was a Revolutionary soldier, having deserted the British arm and joined the colonist. In 1863 Dr. Brice and family moved to Kansas and located on a farm near Mound City. On their way to Linn County they passed through Lawrence two days after the massacre at that place, and this and other experiences gave them a full realization of border life. They lived in and near Mound City until about 1890, when they moved to Pleasanton, where, the following year, Dr. Brice passed away, and since that time Grandma Brice has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Bartleson. Five (six) children were born to them, two dying in infancy. One girl died at the age of 14, before they left Iowa. A son, Don Carlos, died at Mound City in 1865, leaving Mrs. Bartleson the only remaining child. The funeral was held at the Bartleson home Sunday, at 10 a.m., conducted by Rev. Withington, and interment took place at the cemetery at Mound City, where the husband and sone were laid to their last rest. At the age of eight Mrs. Brice united with the Methodist church and during the remaining years of her long and useful life she was ever faithful to her religious belief and her everday walk was a sermon of purity and right living. For several years she has been quite feeble in body but her mind was always clear and she was ever the same, noble, christian, lovable little woman." ( Esther was an invalid for many years and sister, Lucy, helped take care of her.)

Some research done by Myra Tolman Patterson, SLC, University Stake, 11th Ward; Tolman Book by L. Devon Mecham, p. 34;  Center Point, Iowa Cemetary;

Notes:
                   In recent years (since about 1980) there has been much discussion as to whether Judson, son of Nathan and Sarah Hewitt Tolman, had the middle name of "Adonirum" (Adnyrum, Adoniran, J. A. Sen., etc.) A middle name does not appear in most primary records such as birth and endowment and in other records he personally wrote. As late as 1982, when the priesthood blessing of Judson were restored, no middle name was used. The name Judson "Adonirum" Tolman was given as the father on the endowment records of some of the children. It is also found in the Chesterfield, Idaho Ward Records as Judson A. Tolman Sen. when he visits to bless grandchildren; Several family members (Including William Odell Tolman, Laurel J. Burningham, Samuel Ernest Tolman, Genevieve Tolman Hofhine, E. Dennis Tolman, Loa Don Hofhine Glade, Pauline Hanks Christiansen, and Loraine Tolman Pace) have done extensive research on Judson, his wives and families, with various conclusions. As the current Vice Chairman over research I feel that it is important to list any and all documentation that is pertinent to the life of Judson. However, in an attempt to avoid disharmony and confusion in the family and within the records we will not use a middle name for Judson on family group sheets or pedigree charts, but in the notes and sources only and the family group record will reflect the best, most accurate data that is available to date. Loraine Tolman Pace 11 Jul 2000.

NAME: When child #4 Joseph Holbrook was endowed, his father's name was listed "Judson Adnyrum Tolman" in Endowment House Record (FHL #0183406, Book G, p 240). In Chesterfield Ward Record Record of Members (FHL #0007419, Book 1 p 2), child #8 Lamoni's father was listed "J. A. Tolman, Sen." and child #13 Wallace's father was listed Judson A. Tolman, Sen." In the same Chesterfield Ward Record of Members, 1884-1906 Section, child #3 Judson Adonirum and child #12 Cyrus father's name was listed as "Judson A. Tolman, Sen." Dora Matilda Tolman's blessing was given by her grandfather, "Judson A. Tolman, Sen." Bountiful Ward Record (FHL #0025821 p. 23). Child #6 Sarah L. Mabey's father's name given as "Judson Adonirum Tolman" in "Our Father's House", p 115, a Family History about Joseph Thomas Mabey by Charles Rendell Mabey, in the possession of Rendell N. Mabey, Salt Lake City.

BIRTH: Land and Property Deeds of Windsor, Kennebec, Maine, 1802-1827, Vol 60 p. 177/179 (FHL #0011102, item 2) When Judson's father purchased land in Windsor 9 Feb 1827 and 24 Mar 1827, he was listed as "Nathan Tollman of Hope, in the county of Lincoln (Maine)." This would indicate Judson was born in Hope. On most LDS church and temple records he listed his birthplace as Windsor, Kennebec, Maine.

BAPTISM: Original baptism 12 Jan 1845 in Iowa. He was excommunicated 3 Oct 1910 and rebaptized 14 Feb 1912, recorded in 1910 and 1912 Davis Stake Annual Genealogical Report/ Bountiful 1st Ward Record (FHL #0025815)

ENDOWMENT: Judson's priesthood and temple blessings were restored 23 Jan 1982, as per letter to E. Dennis Tolman dated 1 Feb 1982 from Val D. Greenwood, Manager of Special Services for the LDS Church, copy of the letter is in Judson Tolman's file in the Thomas Tolman Family Genealogy Center in Bountiful. The blessings were restored by Pres. Spencer W. Kimball. The original dates were restored as they were first performed in his life time (Information given by Val D. Greenwood to Genevieve Tolman Hofhine per telephone conversation 7 Sep 1983.). Endowment date 3 Feb 1846 recorded in Nauvoo Temple Endowment Register, p 282 (FHL (book) 977.343/N1 K 29c). Also LDS Ordinance Index. In an article writtenfor the LDS Encyclopedia compiled by Andrew Jenson, Vol. 2, p 78, 1914, Judson listed his endowment date 27 Jan 1846. There is no record of his endowment on that date.

                   NAME: One family record has middle name as William. The same family group record from the 1970's lists a wife, Isadore Peavey, but George's age at the time of his death would suggest he wasn't married. The birth date also conflicts (27 Aug 1832), suggesting that it was a record of a George William Tolman, who is not the same person as George Washington Tolman.

Logan Temple Endowments for dead #177957, lists several ancestors whose work was done by Judson, Cyrus and families. In that record Judson is proxey for the endowment of his brother, George Tolman, and lists his baptism as April 1845, which would indicate that four brothers joined the Mormon Church while living instead of the three we have traditionally believed in the family organization. Research of Pauline Christensen; See also: Sealing Record Living & Dead, Children to Parents, Salt Lake Temple, 24 Oct. 1894, p. 302. FHL Special Collections, film #1239604

DEATH: Logan Temple index card on film # 1263468.  Temple Record in Bk C p. 146 No. 5182.  No day or month given.  FHL Special Collections.  Also, history notes written by Jessie B. Kincaid, great granddaughter of Nathan and Sarah Tolman states George was 16 yrs old at death;
