Balthaser Römer, born 7 Feb 1867 in Climbach about one in the morning. Son of Caspar Römer, citizen and farmer, and his wife Katharina neé Krieb, the sixth child, second son. Baptized on 17 Feb 1867. Sponsors: (1) Maria Katharina Nein, wife of citizen and farmer Jacob Nein of Climbach; (2) Balthaser Conrad, citizen and______ meister.


Balthasar was a tailor who made uniforms for firemen and postal workers, etc. Neu-Isenburg was the city for the hand-workers who worked for the profesisonal people who lived in Frankfurt. Neu-Isenburg was founded as a Huguenot community in the 17th century at the invitation of the Fürst von Ysenburg. The community was called New-Isenburg to honor the Fürst. Huguenots were noted for their hand-work skills.

                   Friedel's family lived in Allendorf, while Friedel lived much of the time in Neu-Isenburg. He had many occupations and lived the life of a single man much of the time.

                   During WWII Helene & August moved to Allendorf/Climbach to avoid the bombing of Frankfurt. August took the train every day the 100 km to Frankfurt to work in a drug wholesale business.

Helene and August visited the Sebewaing Roemers in1960, at which time they also stayed with Helene Schunk Smith in Chicago.

                   Karl and Friedel did not get along very well. One day after a big argument, their mother said, "I wish you would stop that." Friedel left the house and was gone over a month, went to the Netherlands. On Christmas Eve he returned to see Annaliese, who had been born in September.


Karl Roemer (Römer) of Neu-Isenberg arrived December  06, 1923  on the USS George Washington, Bremen to New York (Ellis Island):

Age 23y. 5'8" Blond hair, blue  eyes.

The USS  George Washington was built by A/G Vulcan Shipyard, Stettin, Germany, 1909. 25,570 gross tons; 723 (bp) feet long; 72 feet wide. Steam quadruple expansion engines, twin screw.  Service speed 18 1/2 knots.  2,679 passengers (568 first class, 433 second class, 1,678 third class).

Built for North German Lloyd, German flag, in 1909 and named George Washington. Bremerhaven-New York service. Interned at New York at the start of World War I in 1914.  Seized by United States Lines in 1917 and renamed USS George Washington. Also Bremerhaven-New York service. Assigned to United States Lines; began Bremerhaven-NY sailings 1921. Laid up in 1940 and Caitlin. Refitted as troopship in 1940; World War II service. Reverted to George Washington. Completely destroyed by a fire at Baltimore; wreckage scrapped in 1951.

His immigration was sponsored by Cousin A.C. Shomsos (Karl Alfred Shomshor) of Scribner,  Nebraska, and he  had at least $10.00.

After arriving in the USA, Karl Roemer went  to  Scribner, Nebraska. However he found the weather too hot and miserable, and the farm work too awful, so he moved to Chicago..

                   Anna was engaged to a man in Neu-Isenberg, when she came to the USA to look for work and how living was in the USA. While in Chicago she got her hair cut short, had her picture made, and sent it back to her finance in Germany. He was upset that she got her hair cut, and she broke off the engagement. About that time she met Herman Schunk.

She knew of the Michigan Roemers in Sebewaing, and visited there.
