October, 1960
When Henry Roemer was 21 years old he saw one brother and sister leave for America and not satisfied to spend his lifetime working in a German factory, he followed 3 years later, arriving in Sebewaing July 2, 1894, and settling first with Mr. and Mrs. Balthaser Schnepp. In 1896 Henry and Wm., who had arrived earlier, purchased a 120 acre farm in partnership in Brookfield Township. They erected a small building for living quarters and sent for their parents and remaining brother and sister to join them in the new world. The family arrived in May of 1897.

The two brothers farmed together until 1909, clearing a few acres each year, ditching as their strength and equipmennt permitted, growing more and better crops each season.

On October 10, 1910, Henry and Marie Illner of Marion Township, Saginaw County, were married at the home of the bridegroom's brother, Balthaser Roemer, in Saginaw. The Ceremony was held on a Monday, with Mr. Roemer arriving from Sebewaing in the morning, going to the courthouse at noon for the license, and the ceremony was performed in the evening by the Rev. Henry Grueber. Marie was also born in Germany on April 2, 1882, coming to America with her parents, August and Caroline (Vogt) Illner at the age of 18 months, settling first in St. Clair County, moving later to Saginaw County. Through mutual friends she met Henry Roemer of Sebewaing who had also been born in Germany.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Roemer, at age 90, celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with an open house at Immanuel Lutheran Church dining hall on Sunday, October 9, 1960. The couple had 9 children. They farmed until 1946 when they retired, with their son Paul taking over the family farm. Two years later they moved to 23 Washington St., Sebewaing, where they were well known to their neighbors, not only as good friends, but also as excellent gardners.

They were members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh until they moved to Sebewaing, when they joined Immanuel Lutheran Church of Sebewaing.
