Preston Ford SOUTHERN
According to Miss Addie Mitchell, her mother had said that Preston's father died when Preston was young and he and his older brother, Alford, were reared by an Aunt Ruth. Preston Ford Southern was one of the early ministers of the Church of Christ in TX. He arrived in Shelby Co. between 1856 and 1859. He purchased a home in the Pleasant Grove community. He had previously lived in Nacogdoches Co. According to Mrs. Myra Kelsey Kerr there were fifteen children in the family of Preston Ford Southern and Martha Ann Bullard. They reared fourteen of them. She also stated that Preston met Martha when he was preaching to the Indians. He was then a Methodist minister. A Wiat Southern, born abt 1825 in MS, is located on the 1860 Shelby Co., TX, census at Beat #9, P.O. Truit's Store, p. 15 [431A], along with his wife Malinda, born abt 1824 in AL and their children: James M., born abt 1854 in AL; H. J. Family legend states that Martha Ann was full-blooded Cherokee. She is said to have been unable to speak English, but able to read and write in Cherokee. Check S. BULLARD - Dawes Application - CHER 41. Burial possibly occurred in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Erath County (between Huckabee and Lingleville) in an unmarked grave. There is a Bullard Cemetery near Reno, Parker, TX -- between Azle and Springtown. David Woodley Southern had a total of 13 children -- 10 by his first wife and 3 by his second one. Some records give David's place of death as Durwood, Carter, OK. Reportedly filed with the Dawes Commission in Tahlequah for membership in the Cherokee Nation, but was rejected.
