Ancestry.com has a submission from quintank@aol.com who lists a John Southern married to Elizabeth Jay Tims, daughter of Alfred (Alford) Tims and Vashti Coleman -- children: D.W., Elizabeth Jay, Sarah A., William Colin, Isaiah, Martha (Mattie), Nancy, Mary Coleman, Polk, Nathaniel, Jesse C., Robert F., Joseph Lafayette, Vashtie. Some research reveals that Elizabeth was probably born abt 1790; however, other research places it much later. Upon investigation it was learned that she was first married to John Jay by whom she had two children: Collie and Monroe. The marriage to John Southern resulted in children: Jesse, Jim, Cicero and Bell. Unless it can be determined that this John Southern also had sons Alford and Preston, and the earlier date is correct, he has to be eliminated as ours.

The "Calendar of the Kentucky Papers of the Draper Collection of Manuscripts", Vol. II, Wisconsin Historical Library, Madison, WI, 1925, pg. 71, records Oct 29, 31, 1803 - Presbyterian Church - Records of Red Oak Congregation the following baptisms: Rebecca, George, and John SOUTHERLAND. Note: Synod of Kentucky was established about 1802.

1. Paul Southern, son of Richard Y. Southern, in a letter dated 28 Jun 1936, stated that his paternal great
-grandfather was John Southern of Warren Co., TN.
