John BLALOCK

Tenn. circuit court 18 Sept 1831 as a resident of the county age 70 and signed declaration for pension. He drew pension about 14 years till his death. It is recorded in Book E. Vol. 7, page 72. Authorities: Tenn Rev Pensioners page 52. Cenusus of Pensioners 1840 pg 141. 3. Orange County marriage bonds 1752- 1868 John Blaclock enlisted Jan 10, 1778 and served six months as Lt. in Capt. Turner Bynurm's Company., Colonel Raleigh Downmans Reg. of North Carolina Militia. Also served as a Lt. from 25 July 1778 for six weeks under said officers and was in a skirmish near the Dismal Swamp. He again served as Lt. 4 months and 16 days from 7 June 1781 under said officers. Was engaged in siege of Yorktown, after which he acted as Capt. of Guard to the prison of Albermarle Barracks until discharged 23 Oct 1781. He was allowed a pension on his application executed 18 Sept 1832 while living in Carter Co. Tenn. His widow received a pension. They received a Bounty Land Warrant, 160 acres.

SOURCES: 1. Family Records David Blalock was a farmer. David Blalock one time President of Macon County Mexican War Veterans Assoc. elected on 47th Annual Renunion. After war he purchased 21 Mexican land grants. He bought 1,150 acres of land at $1 per acre, most of which he kept. He was estimated to be worth fully $100,000. The 1860 Census gave DAvid Blalock of Wilson Co., NC his age as 39, Real Estate 18,000, Personal property $1000. Minerva age 28.Matilda age 12, Lauretta age 5, Catherine age 5, David age 4, Ellen age 2. Living next to Henry Traughber. Decatur Review Aged couple at Mt. Zion suddenly afflicted. Mt. Zion, Illinois Jan 2 - Mrs. Minerva Blalock died at her home here at 10 minutes after midnight last night after a short illness. Her husband, David blalock, is in a critical condition and not expected to live. Mr. Blalock is 87 years old and his wife was 79. both have been in the best of health and were able to bet about town reddily until about a week ago when both became ill with what seemed to be the grip. There are no hopes for the recovery of Mr. Blalock. Mrs. Blalock would have been 80 years old in another month. The couple were married in North Carolina Oct 1, 1846. They moved from that state to Macon County in 1850 and have lived here on a farm near Mt. Zion, moving to town 8 years ago. Mr. Blalock was born in Mitchell County, South Carolina Oct 5, 1820. His wife who was Miss Minerva Phillips, was born in the same county. Mr. B was volunteer in the Mexican War serving as a private from Feb 14, 1841 to the close of the ware in the First North Carolina Regiment. His brother, Tilman was captain of his company. Ater the war Mr. B purchased from his comrades 21 Mexican land grants and in search of government land he rode on horseback from North Carolina to Iowa in 1849. Failing to find anything to suit him he returned home. When he and his wife came back to Macon County, the next year, they drove in a two horse wagon. They settled 2 miles west and one mile south of Mt. Zion. Mr. B's first purchase of land was 160 acres from $1.50 and acre. He accumulated between 800 and 900 acres around Mt. Zion, which he two or three years ago dived among his children. Six children were born to the couple, four of whom are living. These are Mr.s Sarah W. Wilson of Arkansas; Mr.s A. B. Scott of Mt. Zion; Mr.s H. J. Ritter, Mt. Zion and David B. Jr. There are 19 grand children and 11 greatgrand children. Mrs. B was a member of the Methodist Church of Mt. Zion.
