Emma Billlings was orphaned when she was 4 years old. She went to live with her grandmother Mary Tokelove Chesson. When Emma was about 10 years old the missionaries came to teach the gospel to her grandmother and Mary invited them in. Her son, Henry, was unhappy about this and asked the missionaries to leave. Mary objected and told the missionaries to stay and soon after joined the church. Her husband did not join the church and so she decided to leave her home and come to America to be with the Mormons. She wanted to take Emma, her grandaughter, with her. Henry, her son, did not approve and kidnapped Emma. Mary was beside herself because she had booked passage on "The Hudson" to America. So she prayed and while praying she she heard a voice say "Mrs. Trowers". She went to Mrs. Trowers and there she found Emma and took her to America.
