JOSIAH CARPENTER WAS ELECTED AS ONE OF THE HIGHWAY SURVEYORS IN 1720.  AT THE
TOWN MEETING HELD 27 OCT. 1721, MR. JATHNIEL PECK, MR. JAMES BOWEN AND MR.
JOSIAH CARPENTER WERE CHOSEN A COMMITTEE TO HANDLE THE TOWN'S PART OF THE
50,000 POUND ISSUE OF PROVIDENCE OF MASSACHUSETTS BAY BILLS OF CREDIT.

DR. COMFORT CARPENTER GRADUATED FROM HARVARD 1730.  ON THE COVER OF A BOOK HE
USED AT COLLEGE, IS WRITTEN:  "CYRIL CARPENTER, BORN 1736".  ALSO THERE IS A
CARPENTER COAT OF ARMS.  THESE SAME COAT OF ARMS ARE CUT ON THE REHOBOTH
TOMBSTONE OF HIS COUSIN DANIEL CARPENTER, WHO DIED AT REHOBOTH IN 1763, AND ARE
THE ARMS OF WILLIAM CARPENTER, ESQUIRE OF COBHAM CO., SURRY, GRANTED 4 MAR 1663
BY SIR EDWARD BYSSHE, KNT CLARENCEUX, TO "WILLIAM CARPENTER & YE SEVERAL
DISCENDANTS OF HIS BODY LAWFULLY BEGOTTON."

There is an interesting letter to Comfort Carpenter found in the notebook of James Bowen --
"providance septr the 11th AD 1736, Sr the time is out that you promised me pay for that Rum and I Bag you would assiste me with (n)otes or money for I am in spedey nesesety for it. from yours, James Bowen . . . to Cumforte Carpenter."
