According to the death certificate of Hugh J. Martin, both his father and mother were born in the United States.  However in conversations with my grandfather, Charles Agustus Martin, he stated that both of his grandparents were born in Ireland.

It should be noted that Hugh J. Martin's death certificate also indicates that Hugh's mother was a MARY McDONALD, not ANNE SHAUGHNESSY from whom Hugh was divorced.

According to the cemetery records for Hugh J. Martin, buried in the same plot is a Margaret (Maggie) R. Martin who died in c. 1913.  Also buried there is and infant by the name of Nicholas Chuche.  Apparently, there is no head stone as the family was quite poor.

The New York City Death Certificate identifies Hugh's mother as MARY McDONALD, who was born in the United States.  It further indicates that his father JOHN MARTIN was also born in the United States.

When Hugh came to America he worked in bars on the New York City docks.  He cleaned out the spitoons for tips.  He later got a job for the City of New York issuing liquor licenses.  All those bar owners who gave him a hard time when he was down on his luck now had to come to him to renew their licenses
