After Jackson Co was formed in 1831 from Mason Co, Joel's home farm,
located about a mile belowRipley, became known as the THE SAYRE
HOMESTEAD or THE SEARS FARM. In June of that year, a meeting of county
officials was held at the farm to determinelocation of a county seat.
The first court in Jackson Co was held at Joel's home, where it continued
to be held for four years until the court house couldbe built. A room in
his house was set aside and kept as a jail.
Jacob Starcher gave land for the formation of a town as the county seat.
He came from Eastern Harrison Co, then he married Ann Staats, Daughter of
Abraham Staats. His will of Feb 12 1838, Jackson Co names his wife Ann;
their sons John, Abraham, William, Phillip;and Daughters Catherine Sayre
deceased at the time and Sarah Starcher. Sarah Starcher married  James
Parks in 1842. This info came from a book "Early Settlers and their
contributions to Jackson Co and its Countyseat, Ripley W Va". by

Joel was married twice. his first wife was Katherine Starcher. she died
about 1828 and was buried in King Cemetery near Ripley WV. About 1836
Jacob Starcher sold his flour mill to Joel Sayre. About 1847 Jacob sold
his saw mill to Col. James Armstrong. Joel laterpurchased this saw mill
and he sold the flour mill to John McGrew. Jacob Sayre continued to
operate the mill until Joel's passing in 1855. In 1862 the flour mill was
sold to D H Hood and became known as Hood's Mill. Joel sold his saw mill
to John Chase, who in 1866 sold it to F R Hassler.
Joel was living in Mason Co in the 1820 and 1830 census'. By 1840 census
he had moved to Jackson CO

                   According to info from Ralph Sayre Hannah was a deaf mute. Katherine and
herattended a school for the deaf in Staunton, VA. In the 1900 census
she was living with her brother in  law John Ewing. She Never married.
1880 enumerated with John Ewing and her sister Jane. She is age 53
