After Jackson Co was formed in 1831 from Mason Co, Joel's home farm,
located about a mile belowRipley, became known as the THE SAYRE
HOMESTEAD or THE SEARS FARM. In June of that year, a meeting of county
officials was held at the farm to determinelocation of a county seat.
The first court in Jackson Co was held at Joel's home, where it continued
to be held for four years until the court house couldbe built. A room in
his house was set aside and kept as a jail.
Jacob Starcher gave land for the formation of a town as the county seat.
He came from Eastern Harrison Co, then he married Ann Staats, Daughter of
Abraham Staats. His will of Feb 12 1838, Jackson Co names his wife Ann;
their sons John, Abraham, William, Phillip;and Daughters Catherine Sayre
deceased at the time and Sarah Starcher. Sarah Starcher married  James
Parks in 1842. This info came from a book "Early Settlers and their
contributions to Jackson Co and its Countyseat, Ripley W Va". by

Joel was married twice. his first wife was Katherine Starcher. she died
about 1828 and was buried in King Cemetery near Ripley WV. About 1836
Jacob Starcher sold his flour mill to Joel Sayre. About 1847 Jacob sold
his saw mill to Col. James Armstrong. Joel laterpurchased this saw mill
and he sold the flour mill to John McGrew. Jacob Sayre continued to
operate the mill until Joel's passing in 1855. In 1862 the flour mill was
sold to D H Hood and became known as Hood's Mill. Joel sold his saw mill
to John Chase, who in 1866 sold it to F R Hassler.
Joel was living in Mason Co in the 1820 and 1830 census'. By 1840 census
he had moved to Jackson CO

                   1870 census she is a widow living in MillCreek, Jackson Court House PO in
Jackson Co WV . She is 62 born in PA  living with her sons Squire W age
30 WV, Charles 25 WV, and Samuel 23 WV. They appear to be working on
Ameila's farm aslaborers. Doc also appears to be working on the farm.
Millie is living in Jackson County in the 1880 census with her sons
Charles and William and a grandson Clarence age 11 years.They were
neighbors to John and William Patterson, Elizabeth's brothers. The census
shows her parents born in PA and parents wereborn in NJ.
Internet; Family Tree posting by CINDY Feb 19 2000 states Ameliacame to

David Little SAYRE - born in Ripley district, Jackson county, April 12,
1840, is descended from two of the best knownof the pioneer families of
this vicinity. Joel and Amelia (Rice) Sayre werehis parents; his father
came to Jackson county in 1801, and his mother in 1812. The first courts
of the county sat at his father's house for four years, magistrate's
court every month, and circuit court twice a year. Shadrach Rice,his
mother's father, served as a scout in the Indian war, under Gen. Anthony
Wayne. At Cottageville, Jackson county, August 28, 1862, the words were
spoken joining the lives of David L. Sayre and Elizabeth, daughter of
Gilbert and Bersheba (Bowers) McKown. She was born in Brooke county,
Virginia, in August 1841, came with her parents to Jackson county about
1858, and she died ather home in Ripley district, October 3, 1882. In
the home she left are six children, born on the following dates: John
Charles, January 5, 1864; Absalom Franklin, November 5, 1865; Edward
Greeley and Ida May, March 28, 1872; LeonaLillian, April 4, 1876; Samuel
Bishop, March 30, 1878. Charles Sayre, a brother of David L., enlisted in
the Confederate army and served through the lastyear of the war between
the States. Under Breckenridge he was in the battlesof New Market and
Cold Harbor. The division was engaged almost without cessation from May
20 to June 8, 1865. David L. Sayre successfully combines the avocations
of miller and farmer in Ripley district, where he is a proprietor ofa
saw-mill and owner of a good farm. He was school trustee in his district
for four years. He receives his mail at Jackson C.H., Jackson county,
West Virginia.

Joel Sayer was found in the 1880 census for Jackson Co. W.Virginia. He
was married to an Elizabeth, who was born in  Ohio. Her mother was born
in Ireland  and his parents were both from W.Virginia. In the 1900 census
they were living in the Ripley District ofJackson Co. W.Va. He was 57 at
this time and was working as a farmer. It appears they had a grandson
living with them at this time, named Fredrick, who was born in April
1888. In the 1900 census they were living in Ripley districtW.Va. They
had been married 39 years and had 13 children, 9 of whom were living.
This census also shows Joel had another name, Doctor.
In the 1910 census he is living in Chester City Grant Dist Hancock
County. He is living with Elizabeth and son Samuel J age 24 born in WV
and a grand son Fred age 25 bornin WV. He has been married for 44 years
age 67 and they had 13 children 9 living Joels father was born in PA
mother NJ. Elizabeth's Father was  born in Ohio mother Ireland. She is 67
years old. Doc is a dipper in the pottery and owned his home free. Samuel
and Fred also worked in the pottery.
Fred was bornApril 22 1884 WV Unclear whose son he is possibly James' or
Elisha as they would be old enough to have a son of this age.
Joel is found in the 1920 censusfor Hancock Co WV ED 10 Grant District
page17 line 27.living on Liberty Street.

Obit from theEast Liverpool Review on June 26 1922. Joel died in his
home Lawrenceville. He was 78 years old. The Rev. R.R. Griffiths pastor
of the Chester Methodist Episcopal Church. He was born in Ripley, WV July
15 1842 and has been a resident of this section for the major portion of
his life.
He is survived by onedaughter, Amanda Smith of Alliance, O. and eight
sons, J A Sayre of Ravenswood, E A Sayre Huntington, D F Sayre
Crooksville, O, R A Sayre, A Sayre, C H Sayre,
W H Sayre all of Chester.
