RESEARCH NOTE: Edward was NOT the son of John Woods and Mary Allen of Norwich. A 70 page long article has been written with over 900 footnotes that details this family's origins from Nuneaton, and gives Edward's parents as Lewis Wood and Margaret Holmes. Extensive research notes from http://www.myancestrallegacy.com/crandall/pafg199.htm are copied in the notes. IMMIGRATION: Bef 29 aug 1639 from http://www.myancestrallegacy.com/crandall/pafg199.htm : I bought the issue of the The Genealogist with Janet Delorey's excellent article some years ago from APSG, Ltd., 255 N. 2nd West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103; a bargain then at only ten dollars. (If they have raised the price on reprints since then I wouldn't blame them.) Even though the article is only 70 pages rather than 90 (it STARTS on page 90), it's a treasure for any descendant of this interesting family. ________________________________________ Posted By: Barry Wood Email: nathan44@aol.com Subject: Re: Nathaniel WOODS b: 1552 England>MA>CT Post Date: April 24, 2000 at 20:03:16 Message URL: http://www.genforum.com/wood/messages/4790.html Forum: Wood Family Genealogy Forum Forum URL: http://www.genforum.com/wood/ Steve -- you have a lot of data in your posting, and I congratulate you on your diligence. Unfortunately, substantial parts of it are wrong. No doubt you will want to correct the erroneous sections. Now that the incorrect information has been posted on the Internet, it becomes necessary to advise the people who posted followups, if not everyone who stumbled across the errant data, of the misstatements. I will post a little reference on each of the followups to your post so that those who commented on it will be set straight. Most notably, the Edward Wood who settled in Charlestown, Mass. was NOT from Norwich at all. He has no connection whatsoever with that Nathaniel Woods you mentioned. There never was any proof for any identification of the immigrant Edward Wood with the Woods of Norwich. One author's vainglorious wishful thinking about a possible coat of arms through the Norwich Woods got translated into fact in the minds of people who have simply accepted what others, who perhaps dreamed of a connection with the armigerous family, have given them. Edward Wood was from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, the son of Lewis and Margaret (Holmes) Wood. Edward married Ruth Lee (or Lea) there 2 Feb 1619 (Julian calendar; 1620 Gregorian). The older children were christened in Nuneaton; later ones may have been christened there as well but the pages of the parish register are illegible or missing for the critical period of 1625-1635. (Having gotten eyestrain trying to decipher the record prior to 1626, I can testify that it's less than perfectly clear before that date.) Actually, there was a wealthy Wood family in Nuneaton, as reflected by the Heart Tax returns, but there is so far as I know no documentation connecting us with that family. Complete, accurate, documented and authoritative information on this family (to the fourth generation in America), with no fewer than 948 footnotes, is found in an article by Janet Ireland Delorey in Vol. 9 of the magazine The Genealogist (Spring 1988), starting at page 90. As of 1995, at least, reprints could be ordered from A.P.S.G., Ltd., 255 N. Second West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103-4545. Steve, going back to your posting showing Edward Wood as a descendant of Nathaniel Woods of Norwich, I should note that I did not attempt to identify all the errors in it. However, here are a few of the major ones that jumped out at me: First, the idea that Edward Wood's oldest daughter married first Solomon Pipps and then Solomon Phipps is obviously erroneous. It was Phipps and only Phipps. It is to Solomon that the descendants of Thomas Wood owe whatever skill at carpentry may have been passed down to them from father to son. Then Solomon "Pipps" is listed as a second WIFE of Thomas' older brother Obadiah Wood Is this the result of some genealogical computer program gone berserk? You have Hannah Grant as the first wife of John Wood (son of Thomas & Ann). In fact, Hannah Grant was his mother in law. Also, with regard to John Wood and his one and only wife Isabel Hazen, the date of birth of their oldest child, Hannah, is off by a year. Then you have an inaccurate birth date for the oldest son, my ancestor Deacon John Wood [Jr.], who was actually born in Rowley 13 Feb 1683/4. No, I do not have any financial interest in the publication referenced above. I do have a desire that our ancestors will be honored by accurate information about their origins. I do appreciate your providing telephone and mail information so that you can be contacted if you, like me, do not check Genforum postings absolutely all the time. Please do not take this followup as personally critical. No doubt you were given a set of information by someone else and passed it on with the best of intentions and without realizing that the Norwich connection is just a myth. I would not have found out Edward Wood's origins myself (which I did independently of Janet's research) had I not thought to look for Obadiah / "Obedia" in the IGI. Where do you fit on the ample Wood tree? There is a 90pp. article by Janet Delorey in the Spring 1988 issue of "The Genealogist" that details 4 generations of this family. For some reason, I have info on all of the children of Thomas and Ann EXCEPT Obadiah, so would be grateful for vitals on him :) Thanks ************************************************** I bought the issue of the The Genealogist with Janet Delorey's excellent article some years ago from APSG, Ltd., 255 N. 2nd West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103; a bargain then at only ten dollars. Page 1794 WOOD Thomas Wood, emigrant ancestor of Pliny Williams Wood, of Worcester, and Judson I. Wood, of Gardner, Massachusetts, is first mentioned in the records of Rowley, Massachusetts, April 7, 1654, when he married Ann (???). Her maiden name is not given but there is much reason for believing that it was Hunt, and she was probably of Ipswich, Massachusetts. John Grant, of Rowley, married Mary Hunt, who made her will in 1697, and called Ann Wood and Susannah Todd, wife of John Todd, of Rowley, "sisters;" and in papers on file in the Essex county probate court with the will both Ann and Susannah are mentioned as being about sixty years old in 1697. In the will of John Todd he mentions "Brother Hunt;" in an affidavit in the Salem records Thomas Wood calls himself about forty years old in 1675 and calls John Todd brother. There is reason to believe that Thomas Wood was the son of William Wood, of Concord, Massachusetts, who came from Matlock, England, in 1638, at the age of fifty-six years, with his nephew, Hon. Thomas Flint, and settled at Concord. He died May 14, 1671, aged eighty-nine years. He is supposed to have been the author of a book entitled "New England Prospect." His will was made September 15, 1670, and proved June 20, 1672. He made bequests to daughter, Ruth Wheeler, and son-in-law. Thomas Wheeler; to his grandchild, Abigail Hosmer; to sons, Thomas and Michael. Shattuck says his children were: Michael. Ruth, Abraham, Isaac, Thomas, Jacob, John, Abigail. Thomas Wood was buried at Rowley, September 12, 1687. His widow Ann died December 29, 1714. All their children were born at Rowley, Massachusetts; they were: 1. Mary, born January 15, 1655, her history unknown (possibly married a Hosmer, see will of William Wood, of Concord). 2. John, born September 2, 1656; married Isabel Hazen, had eleven children. 3. Thomas, born August 10, 1658; married Mary Hunt, probably of Ipswich; nine children; he was buried December 1, 1702. 4. Ann or Mary Ann, born August 8, 1660; married, January 15, 1678. Benjamin Plumer. 5. Ruth, born May 21, 1662; married Captain Joseph Jewett, January 16, 1680-81; he died October 30, 1694; she married (second) John Lunt, October 26, 1696; she died November 29, 1734. 6. Josiah (twin), born September 5, 1664; married (first) Sarah Elithorp, 1685; married (second) Mary Felt, 1689; had two children. 7. Elizabeth (twin), born September 5, 1664. 8. Samuel, born December 26, 1666, died November 25, 1690; married Margaret Elithorp; had one child. 9. Solomon, of whom further. 10. Ebenezer, born December 29, 1671; married Rachel Nichols and had eight children. 11. James, born June 22, 1674, died October 18, 1694. _________________________________________ Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worchester County vol2 Author: Ellery Bicknell Crane Call Number: F72.W9C8vol.2 This book contains a history of Worchester County Massachusetts. Thomas Wood (1), of Rowley, who was the emigrant ancestor of many of the Worcester county Wood families, was the progenitor of Charles Mortimer Wood of Upton, Massachusetts. Thomas Wood came to New England Probably soon after 1650. He married Ann Todd (or Hunt) April 7, 1654. They made their home in Rowley. He appears to have been a quiet, industrious man. He died in Rowley, September, 1687, and was buried there September 12. His widow lived until December 29, 1714. All their children were born in Rowley. Among the old family papers of Charles Mortimer Wood is a record written possibly by Ebenezer Wood, grandson of Thomas Wood, and an ancestor of Charles M. Wood, giving the information that Thomas and Ann Wood came from Yorkshire, England to Rowley. The children of Thomas and Ann Wood were: 1. Mary, born January 15, 1655. 2. John, born September 2, 1656, married Isabel Hazen. 3. Thomas, born August 10, 1658, married Mary Hunt. 4. Ann (or Mary Ann), born August 8, 1660. 5. Ruth, born May 21, 1662. 6. Josiah. 7. Elizabeth (twin of preceding), born September 5, 1664. 8. Samuel, born December 26, 1666. 9. Solomon, born May 17, 1669. 10. Ebenezer. 11.
