He was among the founders of Hartford, Connecticut, and his name is on the monument to the first settlers there. He doubtless came with the Rev. Thomas Hooker to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and then went with him to Hartford. Most of these original proprietors of Norwich were from Saybrook, and East Saybrook (now Lyme). Hugh Calkins and his son and son-in-law and John Pease, John Gager, Jeremiah Smith and Robert Alien, were from New London.
