                   Note: Nils was born to a young unmarried woman in Honefoss.  She went away to have the baby.  Place of birth is unknown.  The young woman's parents asked Christian and Marthe Schau (who were suffering persecution because of their baptism in the Mormon Church, and financial stress because no one would buy  from their bakery anymore) to take the baby to Oslo and raise them as their own.  They gave Christian some money to help raise the child.  So Christian and Marthe Schau raised Nils Hjalmar as their son.  Laura Schau Winther commented in later years that the children did not know that Nils was not their real brother until they were older.  Laura said she had often wondered why Nils could not sing, as the rest of the family loved to sing.
