Biography of Warner Hoopes (Life sketch on Website of Lynnda Garrett on Rootsweb.com Email address lynnda.garrett@verizon.com) Born 1817 Warner was raised in an LDS home, his parents having joined the Church early. They suffered the persecutions of Ohio, Missouri and Nauvoo. He was a shoemaker by trade and Priscilla helped him by sewing the tops of the shoes during the day while he worked on the Nauvoo Temple. He served a mission to York County Pennsylvania in 1843. His family was part of the group of saints who witnessed the miraculous appearance of the quail, which saved them from starvation. He moved his family back to Missouri near St. Joseph where he was able to find employment. While there, he was falsely accused of a crime and thrown into jail for a year. During this time the money he had saved for the trip west went to feed his family and pay his legal fees. He finally was able to get his family across the plains and to the SL Valley. They settled in Bountiful and later in Richmond in Cache Valley. In 1865 he moved his family to Weston, Idaho, where he married his second and third wives. LDS Historical website on Rootsweb: For the first ten years of his life as a Mormon Elder, Warner spent most of his time in missionary work. He worked in the surrounding states, and while the Saints were fleeing through Missouri before the mobs in the winter of 1838, leaving bloody footprints on the frozen ground, he alleviated the suffering very much by sitting near the campfire far into the night making shoes for those who had been driven from their homes before they could collect the necessary wearing apparel. Joseph Smith Sr., father of the Prophet Joseph, and the first patriarch of the Church gave him a blessing. One of the promises given was that the Lord would chastise him whenever necessary. Warner always considered this a great blessing, and one which was literally fulfilled. Whenever he became the least bit slack in his religious duties, the Lord chastened him.
