RESEARCH NOTE: - From "The admission register of the Manchester school, with some notices of the more distinguished scholars." (1866) - John, son of John Markland, tradesman, Manchester. Many members of the ancient and highly respectable family of Markland of the Meadows, near Wigan, were educated at the school. [John Markland, born 21st August 1740, succeeded to the family estates of the Entwisles of Foxholes, and assumed by sign manual the name of Entwisle in 1787 under the will of Robert Entwisle esq.; his grandfather John Markland having married Ellen, grand- daughter of John Entwisle esq. of Foxholes, treasurer of the Middle Temple and recorder of Liyerpool. J2.] He was a magistrate and deputy-lieutenant of the county of Lancaster, feoffee of the school and of Chetham*s hospital, and high sheriff in 1798 ; an occasional attendant at the anniversary meetings, and steward with the Rer. Thomas Foxley in 1790. [He rebuilt the old house at Fox- holes, and was colonel of the Rochdale volunteers. He was succeeded at his death by his son John Entwisle esq., A.M. of Christ's college, Cambridge, high sheriff in 1824, and member of Parliament for the borough of Rochdale. John Markland, the father, was constable of Manchester in 1749 and boroughreeve in 1759.
RESEARCH NOTE: -A letter from Elizabeth Jones (daughter of Edward Jones and Elizabeth Markland) to her neice, Kate Allred (daughter of John Markland Jones and Elizabeth Mulliner), gives a few more clues about the Markland ancestors. It states that Robert Markland went to war, and was captured or presumed dead, and that Elizabeth remarried to a man named Stanley. When Robert returned home, she chased him off with a broomstick, having thought him dead all those years. Robert then went off to the Indies, where he married a native woman and was quite wealthy. She also states that she thought the son John Markland was the only child of this marriage, or at least the only son. -An obituary found in "The Gentleman's Magazine," in 1825, reveals that Robert Markland Jr. was originally from Jamaica, but returned to England due to health reasons. This shows evidence that Robert Markland Sr. lived in Jamaica, and that he had more sons from his first marriage, as is evidenced in LDS records. -Temple work performed by John Markland Jones in 1951 seals Elizabeth Markland (presumedly Elizabeth Hibbert Markland) to William Standly, referencing a marriage in 1786 in Manchester. Further research is needed to determine if the children of this couple are correctly listed. Parenthetical names are added. Santa Cruz, California, March 5th, 1899. Dear Kate: We received your letter allright and also baby's picture and thank you very much. I will give you what little I can, Kate, of your grandparents and great grandparents. My Mother was born in England and my Father in Wales, I think. I know he is of Welch descent. If I remember right, his Mother is Welch, and his Father English (?). My Father and Mother were married in the County of Lancaster in the Parish Church of Manchester, November 6th, 1826. The names of the witnesses are Robert Hilton and Edward Hyde. It will be found on page 217. I think that several of the children were born in Manchester, and then they moved to Ashton-under-Lyne. That is where I was born and my brother, Nephi. My Mother's maiden name was Markland. Now I will tell you what little I know about her grandparents. "I have heard my Mother (Elizabeth Markland) tell what her father's (John Markland) Mother (Elizabeth Hibbert) told her about Grandpa Markland (Robert Markland) going to the war and I think he was taken prisoner and he was reported dead. Grandmother Markland heard nothing of him and thought he was dead and married a man named Stanley. I don't know how long they had been married when Grandpa Markland came back and Grandma ran him off with a broomstick. He went to the East Indies and married a native and they were quite wealthy. My Mother's Father was the only son, and I think the only child by his first wife. The Whiteheads are also related to us" but in what way" I do not know. name was Martha; I think she is my Aunt. I have a letter written by John Markland to his Mother, March 12th" 1799" and I prize it highly. "My Mother lived with her Grandmother until she was eight years old. Her Father died at that time and she was taken home and put to work in a factory to help support the younger children. Her Grandfather and Grandmother Stanley kept a butchershop. That is all I seem to remember at this time. We hope this finds you all well as it leaves us. We would very much like to see you all but don't think we would be able to as times are hard. We will close. Hoping to hear from you soon. Love to all, from your loving Aunt Lizzie and Cousin Emma.
