John Amasa Whetten and Martha Carling were sealed in marriage on 22 Feb 1903 in Colonia Garcia, Temosachi, Chihuahua, Mexico by Alexander F. MacDonald, Maricopa Stake President, who had the authority to perform sealings. All children were born in the Covenant. John and Martha received their endowments in 1912. (The sealing records of A.F. MacDonald are in the LDS Church Archives.) John was sealed to his first wife 30 July 1900 in Colonia Garcia, Mexico by President Joseph F. Smith and instructed by him to come to Salt Lake City to receive their endowments as soon as they were able to do so. Baptized in Snowflake, Navajo, AZ by Aliff Larson, confirmed by John Henry Smith. Ordained a deacon by James Sellers in Col. Pacheco. Received Patriarchal Blessing 29 June 1908 from James H. Martineau. Ordained High Priest Nov. 1917 by Joseph C. Bentley and set apart as first counselor to Bishop Lester Farnsworth, Garcia Ward. Summer 1920 set apart as first counselor to Bishop Tom Sevey, Chuichupa Ward. Whetten, 81, retired rancher, will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow in the Mesa 11th Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mr. Whetten, a native of Kingston, Utah, died Sunday in his home at 440 E. Kimball St. here. He spent most of his life in Mexico and moved to Mesa seven years ago. He was a worker in the Arizona temple. He is survived by his wife, Drusilla H., seven sons, Glen, Bert, and Jay, all of Juarez Mexico, Lester, Provo, Utah, Loren, Cedar City, Utah, Leland, Georgia, and Carl, Mesa; 10 daughters, Mrs. Bertha Shupe and Mrs. Thelma Judd, both of Juarez, Mrs. Irene Brown, Provo, Mrs. Blanche Peterson, Kingman, Mrs. Vernelle Reed, Safford, Mrs. Lavern Pratt, Willcox, Mrs. Vilda Hunsaker, Honeyville, Utah, Mrs. Ada Davis, Grand Junction, Colo., Mrs. May Hamblin and Mrs. Martha Tarwater, both of El Paso; seven brothers, six sisters, 76 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren.
