                   RESEARCH NOTE:
John married three times, each deceased before him. It is not known when or how he got to America, but in 1638 was an inhabitant of Aquidneck Island, probably with his son Adam. He was called "Oulde John Mott," and was given support from the city of Portsmouth from 1644 until his death almost 12 years later. John is sometimes given as the son of Mark Mott of Braintree, though this does not fit the family of Mark Mott who is outlined in "The History and Topography of the county of Essex," as his son John married an Alice Harrington and had six children which are not the children of this John. Further information in notes.

Father **John Mott2 b. circa 1570, d. July 1656
Mother **Elizabeth (?) b. before 1576, d. 2 January 1610

Birth 12 August 1596 Adam was born on 12 August 1596 at Saffron Walden, Essexshire, England. He was possibly born in Cambridge, England per rhodesmk@swbell.net.

Marriage #1 28 Oct 1616 Adam Mott Sr, 20 years old, married **Elizabeth Creel, daughter of John Thomas Creel and Nancy Stamps, 28 October 1616 in Saffron Walden, Essexshire, England.

Marriage #2 11 May 1635 Adam married secondly Sarah Jennings and the widow of Englebret Lott 11 May 1635 in Horseheath, Cambridgeshire, England.

On 2 July 1635 Adam 39 years old, a tailor and his wife Sarah, 31 years old with 5 children: Jo: 14; Adam 12; Jonathan 9 Elizabeth 6 and Mary 4 boarded the ship Defense at London England bound for the colonies. The Mary who is 4 years old, is said to be actually Mary Lott, daughter of Sarah by her first husband.

3 July 1635 His passage stated that he came from Cambridge. He evidently belonged to the nearby parish of Saffron Walcen, Co. Essex, England. Likely, this should read Saffron Walden, England. He first came to Boston, then lived in Hingham, Massachusetts and finally in about 1638 moved to Rhode Island.

1636 They had at least 3 children all of whom are purported to have been born in Rhode Island. Jacob, who was born about 1636 (Austin says 1633 but that can not be correct as they were not married until 1635 and came to the colonies is 1635 and Jacob was NOT with them). He is said to have died about 15 Nov 1711. Gershom and Eleazer or Eleazah about whom little is known.

25 May 1636 On 25 May 1636, he was listed as free man at Roxbury, Mass. He and his wife were members of First Church at Roxbury. He soon moved to Hingham where he had a grant of land.

23 June 1636 In 1636, at Portsmouth, he and others were admitted inhabitants of the island of Aquidneck, having submitted themselves to the government that is, or shall be, established. On 23 June 1638, he had a grant of land on the west side of the spring. On 6 Sept. 1638, the Mass. authorities directed the constable of Hingham to attach him and bring him before the Governor. But the order came too late for he had relocated out of their jurisdiction.

1638 Portsmouth was settled in 1638 as the second settlement in the area. With Anne Hutchinson as leader of the settlement, Portsmouth became the first community founded in the New World by a woman. Its Indian name was Pocasset, and on May 12, 1649, the name of Portsmouth was confirmed. And as original settlement, Portsmouth became part of the original group of settlements which united to form the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

1640 On 12 Jan. 1640, Adam and others were chosen to lay out lands at Portsmouth, in what is now Rhode Island.
On 16 Mar. 1641, he was a freeman.
In 1642, he was Clerk of the Military Company.
On 27 May 1644, he was granted an addition to his lot.
On 30 Sept.1653, he deeded son Adam 12 acres.
In 1655, he was a freeman.
1651: On 10 April 1651 Adam Mott Sr. of Portsmouth sold to Mr. John Sanford of Portsmouth "my part in the Calves Pasture lying between his house and the Claypit Field" .

Will: 2 April 1661 On 2 Apr. 1661, he wrote his will and it was proved 31 Aug. 1661.

Death: 12 August 1661 Adam died on 12 August 1661 at Portsmouth, Newport county, Rhode Island at age 65.
